Martin Sheen has been one of my favorite actors since I was a kid. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I discovered that we were both from Dayton, Ohio, so of course, that made me like him even more. After learning of his activist career and listening to his interviews (particularly the one with Krista Tippett), I learned more about who he is as a man and came to appreciate him that much more.

With regards to this book, it takes the reader on a wonderful trip, touching 4 generations of the Estevez family. It reveals the flaws and fragility that all families have in common and does a great job of making their family accessible, like they could be your next door neighbors.

Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I recommend it for anyone interested in the Sheen family or who enjoy stories about person growth and family.

I enjoyed the book, although I think the use of profanity was unnecessary. That aside, the book added a good amount of background to the story being told on the TV show. It’s not required reading in order to enjoy the show, but it does add a bit of context.

Good story, but the structure was distracting

I thought the overall story was good, but the jumping back and forth in time was distracting and unnecessary. A linear telling of the events would have made the story much more enjoyable. Having said that, if your tolerance for constant shifts in story timeline is high, then you can enjoy it like I did.
