Elaine Welteroth so adeptly captures the unique experiences of women of color trying to navigate predominantly white spaces that you will find yourself, nodding “mm-hmm”, clicking your fingers in solidarity, crying and cheering throughout this stellar performance of a book.

Story
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Engaging, candid, controversial, humorous
Reviewed: 06-17-17
Noah doesn't disappoint with this engaging memoir, which he narrates excellently. The book is thoughtfully seasoned with Noah's unabashed humor. I was pleasantly surprised by its informative value. It's not just fun and games. Throughout, Noah offers deep, personal insight into how apartheid continues to haunt South African society. What's unsurprising is that race, religion, and politics are all fair game in this critical, and sometimes controversial, account. Mostly, I found Noah's candor refreshing, although I cringed through one or two segments which may have gone a bit too far. Overall, Born a Crime reflects the animation, danger, laughter, complexity and pain that characterises Noah's colourful upbringing.
