Excellent review, from liberal standpoint

Nice summary of American system although I think if I were conservative I would find it too biased. I like that there are recommendations to improve system, not just a laundry list of complaints without redress.

Story
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born". An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy - abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued, and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape - but he can’t stop society’s collapse.

Excellent start to series

The scale and depth of character development as well as storyline really makes this book shine. Felt very akin to The Stand in terms of how well written. Praise from S. King is well earned. Some books are so riveting I have to read as well as listen, this is one of those.

Good LitRPG with one (common to genre) problem
Reviewed: 05-23-22
Story, character development, themes all good and novel. Need to get an editor. Using same word repeatedly in multiple sentences drives me crazy. This is not a unique problem with this book, the whole genre suffers from poor grammar and lack of adequate variety when it comes to vocabulary. I listened to the whole book in spite of this and enjoyed it.

Story
Stranger in a Strange Land is the epic saga of an earthling, Valentine Michael Smith, born and educated on Mars, who arrives on our planet with “psi” powers—telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others—and complete innocence regarding the mores of man. After his tutelage under a surrogate father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a kind of messiah.

Wanted to like
Reviewed: 12-18-17
I have loved all types of scifi/fantasy from Terry Brooks, to George R R Martin to Frank Herbert. I wanted to like this book. Just listened to DADOES by PK Dick. Was ready for more classic Sci-fi. Where better to turn than a novel that is billed as the most read Sci-fi book ever. What a let down. Bland characters, bland storyline, lots of barely dressed philosophy. Too in your face and explicit in regards to the latter. Skip this one for something with better depth like Dune, a classic deserving of the title. Or try Red Rising. But this one disappoints. I have listened to hundreds of hours of books, this is one of the few I just couldn't like even though I tried.
