Story
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

I can’t believe I never knew of Hela before listening to this book. The story of Henrietta Lacks and her family is profoundly important, yet deeply sad. Some parts are disturbing, but vital to the story. Top 10 on my book list for 2025.

This story had it all. Facts, fiction, suspense, legalize, romance, and a love for the ages. Love of America’s favorite doll and the strong love between the woman who created Barbie along with her husband.

Raw and real life story-telling through the trials of Appalachian locals. Redeeming if the reader can endure the heartaches and heart breaks.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
