Story
In the tradition of Jonathan Swift and Mark Twain, America Fantastica delivers a biting, witty, and entertaining story about the causes and costs of outlandish fantasy, while also marking the triumphant return of an essential voice in American letters. And at the heart of the novel, amid a teeming cast of characters, readers will delight in the tug-of-war between two memorable and iconic human beings—the exuberant savior-of-souls Angie Bing and the penitent but compulsive liar Boyd Halverson.

Reader is awful
Reviewed: 02-11-24
I don’t know what I think of the book, because the narrator made everyone in the story seem idiotic and un interested. It was like Rod Serling or Robert Stack reading the story, and for me, it made it hard to listen to and impossible to connect to.

Narration was terrific

I wonder if reading it would be as entertaining as listening to the narrator. I just finished a book by Mary Roach where the narration was so bad it ruined the authors work, and this one was the polar opposite.

Story
Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? Smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour?

Narrator was awful

All of Mary Roaches jokes were ruined by this narrator. Her delivery is just bad. I wouldn’t recommend her to read books on tape. I couldn’t wait until the book was over do I could move on and not have to listen to her total absence of humor. She ruined an otherwise amusing book, for me
