I was struggling to finish the book as I'm really not a fan of the modernist style, but this audiobook was really wonderful, the performance made everything so much clearer and alive in my mind. A new favorite.

Mind Blown
Reviewed: 11-16-16
What did you love best about White Teeth?
Incredibly intricate, multilayered story, with fantastic attention to detail.
What did you like best about this story?
The character build up and perfectly timed twists and turns.
What does Jenny Sterlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I hated her voice at the start, but wow, what an incredible performer!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
At times it made me very uncomfortable, which is a good thing. It opened my mind, especially in terms of better understanding how it is to feel as a outsider living in a foreign land, even if you've lived there all your life. Multiple moments of laughter, no tears.
Any additional comments?
I don't think I would have been able to finish the book, as some parts are a bit tedious, but the audiobook is well worth a read. Thoroughly enjoyed Smith's writing; she is incredibly talented.

Story
In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is - a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh. Down to earth and relatable, frank and unapologetic, Amy Schumer is one of us: She relies on her sister for advice, still hangs out with her high school pals, and continues to navigate the ever-changing boundaries in love, work, and life.

I love Amy, always have, always will, but this wasn't what I was expecting. A bit heavy at times, and I respect that, but I came here for the giggles and to escape a rough patch, not to cry in the car on my way to work. Good read all the same, amazing lady, amazing life stories.

Story
Gloria Steinem - writer, activist, organizer, and one of the most inspiring leaders in the world - now tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of how her early years led her to live an on-the-road kind of life, traveling, listening to people, learning, and creating change. She reveals the story of her own growth in tandem with the growth of an ongoing movement for equality. This is the story at the heart of My Life on the Road.

This is the first book I've recommended to numerous friends. If I wasn't sure what being a feminist truly meant before, I do now, and it's a beautiful thing. I laughed, I cried, I learnt so much from this book. It's not only about feminism, her stories about travel and people and life were just as striking and poignant. Gloria is a true icon and has made such an important mark on the world.

I never knew much about Sleater-Kinny, but am a die hard Portlandia fan, so was very excited to hear the story about the band who helped make her the awesome person she is today. The story wasn't always pleasant, but a lot of her life experiences were relatable. Throughly enjoyed the interview at the end. Really hope she writes another after the next chapter of her life post-Portlandia.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Probably Would Have Been Better To Read
Reviewed: 01-14-16
Didn't enjoy the narration at all. Not sure if it is due to the story and characters, or simply down to the accents performed. Interesting concept for a story, but left confused throughout and at the end. Don't regret listening to it, perhaps might read again or watch the TV series.
