Excellent and Original Viking Themed Fantasy Series

Overall
5 out of 5 stars
Performance

Story
5 out of 5 stars

The Bloodsworn Saga is a beautifully realized, fresh and original Viking themed fantasy series. It has extremely well written action and battle scenes and is fast-paced and compelling. It is extremely violent and portrays a grim and brutal world dominated by violence and the power principle. There are multiple compelling characters and points of view, and meaningful threads of plot development, but it is definitely heavier on action than on philosophical or spiritual vision. I would highly recommend the series for anyone who loves well written action and fight scenes and an original and compelling fantasy world but not for those who are squeamish about violence or find numerous extended fight scenes tedious. This is one of the most consistently well realized fantasy series I have read, and the final book is a satisfying conclusion to the saga.

Dune is in some sense the nearest equivalent of the Lord of the Rings in the realm of Science Fiction, creating a deeply envisioned and textured world and narrative, It is visionary in its exploration of the potentials of human consciousness as a path forward beyond the limitations of mechanistic computer technology, but it’s fatal flaw is its failure to see beyond the limitations of the power principle.

Like Ursula Le Guin‘s other science fiction books, The Lathe of Heaven is thoughtful and well written, and is perhaps stronger in visions and ideas than in characters and plot. After an artful and fascinating setup, the book has a meandering pace and direction with some interesting developments but not the climactic force of a great novel.

This feels more like a Japanese fable or fairytale than a full fantasy novel. It is well written and portrays a magical and fascinating world reminiscent of the Otori novels, but the characters feel more remote and the story more ephemeral.

This book is an interesting mixture of science fiction and fantasy in a mostly Asian inspired setting, with excellent fight scenes, compelling elemental magic and an interesting story but with strange pacing and unexpected and understated plot developments, especially in its final third.

The Odyssey is a complex, beautiful and magical epic, but this translation is too colloquial and modern to fully convey its ancient foreignness and lyrical poetic beauty.
