Story
Exiled by her despotic brother, princess Malini spends her days dreaming of vengeance while imprisoned in the Hirana: an ancient cliffside temple that was once the revered source of the magical deathless waters but is now little more than a decaying ruin. The secrets of the Hirana call to Priya. But in order to keep the truth of her past safely hidden, she works as a servant in the loathed regent’s household, biting her tongue and cleaning Malini’s chambers.

This was a visceral read at times, and at others a bit confusingly cerebral. I wish I had started looking up certain words from the beginning to help orient myself, but most of this story read like a familiar epic. Considering rereading bc I was confused at times and wish to better understand the world Tasha Siri has created.

Story
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

This was a sweet book. A little moralizing at times, but the characters felt real, especially the children. This book was a warm hug to my inner child.
The pacing was good, there was a believable conflict and while it was somewhat saccharine at times, I would read this again and recommend it to folks needing a pick me up.

On the outside, Yumi Chung suffers from #shygirlproblems, a perm-gone-wrong, and kids calling her "Yu-MEAT" because she smells like her family's Korean barbecue restaurant. On the inside, Yumi is ready for her Netflix stand-up special. Her notebook is filled with mortifying memories that she's reworked into comedy gold. All she needs is a stage and courage.

This isn’t the most realistic book, but it’s lovely all the same. The voice actor had great range, and the performance made me tear up a few times. Definitely written for a younger crowd and a bit predictable but I think adults can enjoy it too. Speaks honestly to a lot of the immigrant experience, and I hope to see more from this author!

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Entrancing

After having listened to this, I’ve become aware of how starved I have been of good stories. Greek myths have been done a thousand times but I’m not sure any has been as good as this. The voice acting makes it feel as though Circe herself is telling me her long story by a fire that doesn’t dare to make noise, doesn’t dare to interrupt. I feel, dramatic as it may sound, that she has given me my voice back. She is immortal but so, so human. I think this is one of the best stories I’ve ever come across, and Madeline Miller has earned all the praise she receives, undeniably.
