Story
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Hard to put down

The storyline keeps you wanting more. Very funny yet sometimes sad. It would be excellent if it were pure fiction. That it is a look into three recent centuries and eight centuries of older Jewish history made all the more interesting. That the fictionalized protagonist are important participants in Jewish, American Jewish and Israeli contemporary history made even more enjoyable. A rewarding listen.

Story
Ten years in the research and writing, Presidents of War is a fresh, magisterial, intimate look at a procession of American leaders as they took the nation into conflict and mobilized their country for victory. It brings us into the room as they make the most difficult decisions that face any president, at times sending hundreds of thousands of American men and women to their deaths.

Story
For 60 years Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in the federal district of Sitka, a temporary safe haven created in the wake of the Holocaust and the shocking 1948 collapse of the fledgling state of Israel. The Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. But now the district is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end.

This recording was not available for some time. I had listened to this a few years ago and when I wanted to listen again it was not availabll. I took a chance, found and grabbed it.
Riegert is perfect for this imaginitive, detailed and darkly humorous story.
You will go back to it many times.
