Story
Ariadne, Princess of Crete, grows up greeting the dawn from her beautiful dancing floor and listening to her nursemaid’s stories of gods and heroes. But beneath her golden palace echo the ever-present hoofbeats of her brother, the Minotaur, a monster who demands blood sacrifice. When Theseus, Prince of Athens, arrives to vanquish the beast, Ariadne sees in his green eyes not a threat but an escape. Defying the gods, betraying her family and country, and risking everything for love, Ariadne helps Theseus kill the Minotaur.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book with one exception...it ended too abruptly for me. The story held my attention very well, even difficult to stop listening to at times, in part because of the excellent reading by Barrie Kreinik. Highly recommend this book!

Clarissa Pinkola Estes is a genius! She is such a powerful storyteller, using her multiple languages to enhance the experience of listening to the tales about women learning to open fully to themselves. I have been a fan of her since reading/studying Women Who Run With the Wolves decades ago. This is a must listen/read for every woman! I will listen to this again and again to glean every bit of wisdom Clarissa has to offer.

Story
Within each woman and man, the dim cavern of the unconscious holds our forbidden feelings, secret wishes, and creative urges. Over time, these "dark" forces take on a life of their own, forming an intuitively recognizable figure - the shadow. A recurring theme in literature and legend, the shadow is like an invisible twin, a stranger that is us yet is not us. When it acts out in the public domain, we witness our leaders, like hero-villains, fall from grace in scandal.

its an introduction versus teaching the skill.

Not what I expected.
Reviewed: 04-23-22
Romancing the Shadow, while well written and performed, was not helpful to me. It's focus is very specifically identifying and working through shadow as it appears in relationships: familial, dating, and committed relationships. The archetypes referred to are too textbook and limited. If you are looking to identify and work through shadow as it appears in your relationships with others, then this book may be helpful.
I, however, was looking for help to do shadow work within myself, bridging between soul and Self as the authors call it, but not in context of external relationships. This book did not have examples or discuss archetypes that were of use to me.

Good story, not great.

Several times in the beginning chapters I considered returning the book but I persisted. The narrator's performance was challenging to listen to, not pausing at the end of sentences before going into the next. Emphasis was not placed properly and intonations that were just off, making it hard to know if the words were being spoken by the characters were their thoughts. Honestly, I don't know anything about the narrator and don't mean any disrespect, but it was very untrained. There are many parts of the story that are cliché and simplistic. Some of the plot was predictable. It did, however, hold my interest to the end.

I enjoyed the mix of narration by Linda Lavin and recorded talks by RBG. Sometimes the recordings, though, we're not high quality and we're difficult to hear. Not only did I learn a lot about Ruth but a lot about the Supreme Court, how it functions, and prominent cases. I had different expectations of the content so while it was very good, it was not outstanding.

I, like the author, am not interested in politics. I didn't really know anything about Michelle, or the rest of the Obama's, aside from some awareness of her initiatives while serving as First Lady. Her biography is an open door to the challenges she faced, and overcame, throughout her life. She shared her heartfelt joys and concerns for her family, her community, and our nation which she served with integrity and passion. She is a beacon for anyone looking to become who they are meant to be, an example of how perseverance and positivity can raise you up and bolster you in the face of obstacles and opposition. I highly recommend this book for everyone, regardless of sex, gender, race, nationality, class, and religion. Bravo, Michelle, bravo!
