Story
What is heroism? What are its moral components - altruism, love, self-sacrifice? Why was it once celebrated, and now often dismissed as anachronistic? In this dramatic and readable account of last stands in history - famous or otherwise - Walsh explores the stakes that led men at very different times and places to face overwhelming odds and certain death for the sake of family, home and country.

I couldn’t get through the ignorance of the introduction
Reviewed: 05-30-24
The book’s introduction was so politically charged with far right thoughts and lines that amounted to “back in my day” I couldn’t get through the first 40 minutes. Of the hundreds of books I’ve purchased on this app, this is one of two I’ve tried to return due to it being so bad. Because I can’t return it, I’ll have to content myself with leaving a review that will hopefully help someone else avoid my mistake in purchasing it.

Story
Discrimination and Disparities challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. It is listenable enough for people with no prior knowledge of economics. Yet the empirical evidence with which it backs up its analysis spans the globe and challenges beliefs across the ideological spectrum.

Strange conclusions
Reviewed: 12-29-21
This book started with good data and interesting facts, but quickly devolved in the second half. It became full of contradictions and hypocrisies while periodically tossing in high brow jabs at less fortunate people (how can poor people be so fat if they can’t keep food on the table?). It’s unfortunate that someone that is so educated would come to conclusions that would require ignoring easily accessible data and making leaps and connections that boggled my mind.
