This wasn’t funny at all. Also, every single voice actor seemed to be speaking at a much higher than normal volume.

Amazing story! Definitely a quality follow up to The House in the Cerulean Sea. The narrator did a decent job, but he was a little too extra at some parts. And he needs to learn how to pronounce gazebo. 100% recommend!

DNF @ 54%. The main characters are childish, boring, and annoying. The only interesting character is gone with over seven hours left in the story. And HOW is such a great actor, John Cho, such a terrible narrator?!

DNF @ 50%. Every. Single. Character was HORRIBLE. The MC was the worst (and obviously very poorly written by a man). The writing is terrible. The only thing that kept me for even 50% was the mystery, but even then the book was just too crappy to continue. I listened to the audio version, and the narrator wasn’t very good either— everything was read in a weird monotone voice.

Highly unlikable characters and poor writing. The narrator was okay, but very flat. There also wasn’t really a difference between most voices.

I DNF's this at about 2 hours in. Both main narrators are awful and the story is poorly written. Cesare writes like a teenage boy writing a teen girl's perspective.

This book is excellent and I highly recommend it. I’d even say it’s the best so far in the series. The issue, however, is the narrator.

She’s usually fantastic, but there must have been something wrong with her when recording this. About every thirty seconds or so she would, between lines, make a loud squelching/gulping noise as if she were trying to create saliva. It was incredibly distracting and almost ruined the book.

The story is terribly written and the narrator is awful. She reads the story with almost no emotion, has barely any differentiation between voices, and mispronounces words. The plot is ridiculous, predictable, and, quite frankly, stupid. Save yourself almost 3 hours and skip this.

The Novel ROCKS, But the Narrator Ruins It

I LOVE this novel. I adore everything P.J. Tracy writes, but especially this one. This novel combines her usual Monkeewrench tech prowess with good police work. There is a terrorism sub plot along with a murder mystery. If you haven’t read/listened to the others in the series you may be a bit lost, but it can still be good on its own as Tracy gives enough backstory for the characters. It is phenomenally written and is an absolute MUST READ.
That being said, this narrator SUCKS. She is just plainly AWFUL. Half of her voices sound identical. For example, when you’re trying to differentiate between speakers in a conversation it’s easy to get lost.
Also, her voice for Gino is just terrible. It’s like someone googled “How to Speak Minnesotan” (true, but also a joke for long time readers) and spoken like that.
She also mispronounces MANY words. And I don’t mean colloquial mispronunciations. She literally mispronounces words. The one that comes to mind right now is ‘nefarious.’ She literally pronounces it “nef-er-ous.” And when she says ‘hovering’ she says “ha-overing.” I’ve found many more in my listen, but those stwo stick out the most.
While this novel is NOT to be missed, you’d do better to read the novel. This speaker ruins the book.
