Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Tedious

About the worst SK book ever.
It’s different and the fantasy world may have some appeal to some people, but not me.

Story
The Natural, Bernard Malamud's first novel, published in 1952, is also the first - and some would say still the best - novel ever written about baseball. In it Malamud, usually appreciated for his unerring portrayals of postwar Jewish life, took on very different material - the story of a superbly gifted "natural" at play in the fields of the old daylight baseball era - and invested it with the hardscrabble poetry, at once grand and altogether believable, that runs through all his best work.

Movie was better

Very different story than the movie. One of the few instances where the movie is better than the book. The Hobbs character isn’t even very likable in the book. Overall, the book was a good listen if for no other reason than to experience Malamud’s original version.

Story
At the dawn of the 20th century, a great confidence suffused America. Isaac Cline was one of the era's new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. The idea that a hurricane could damage the city of Galveston, Texas, where he was based, was to him preposterous, "an absurd delusion." It was 1900, a year when America felt bigger and stronger than ever before. Nothing in nature could hobble the gleaming city of Galveston, then a magical place that seemed destined to become the New York of the Gulf.

Did not hold my attention
Reviewed: 04-06-21
Other Erik Larson books have been riveting stories that march along, pulling the reader into the story and that period of time. This book was bland with way too much minutia. Could have been told in 2-3 hours instead of 8:45.

Story
Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realizes he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he's ever encountered. Jack investigates - against the warnings of the police and his own editor - and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. Undetected by law enforcement, a vicious killer has been hunting women, using genetic data to select and stalk his targets.

Fair Warning - This book stinks
Reviewed: 09-11-20
I've enjoyed all of Michael Connelly's books, except Fair Warning. This is clearly his worst effort.
Far fetched ridiculous story and tough to like the main character.
