Groundbreaking Book... But Dated
Reviewed: 04-19-22
I would have given this a 4.5/5 when the book came out but today it's a solid 3.
The author discusses PDAs, file cabinets... pre-Todosist, Things 3, and other apps that make this system much easier to implement.

Story
What story begins in a bedroom in suburban New Jersey in the early '60s, unfolds on some of the country's largest stages, and then ranges across the globe, demonstrating over and over again how rock and roll has the power to change the world for the better? This story. The first true heartbeat of Unrequited Infatuations is the moment when Stevie Van Zandt trades in his devotion to the Baptist religion for an obsession with rock and roll.

This was a SURPRISE! Much better than expected!

First off, I am not a Stevie Van Zandt fan, per se. I don't care for Bruce Springsteen or his music. Of course, I know who he is in the music genre and from The Sopranos. But I bought the book based on a Talking Sopranos episode and it was totally worth it!
I learned a lot about the author and having him read his words in his own voice really pushed it over the top. You could hear him smile in certain passages. I don't think I would have appreciated the actual book as much as I did with him reading it to me.
Super interesting guy. For me, he kind of went off the rail in the last chapter or two when he delved into American politics but the rest of the book was really well done.

Who made the phone call that got HBO to launch The Sopranos? What’s the significance of all those eggs? And, what the hell ever happened to the Russian? Michael Imperioli, Steve Schirripa, and the entire cast and crew of The Sopranos have all the answers - and they’re revealing where all the bodies are buried.

Not a fan of the "fake" arguing or stilted dialog
Reviewed: 11-03-21
If you have listed to the Talking Sopranos podcast you will know that Michael and Steve get into it sometimes over fan theories. Steve doesn't believe any of them and Micheal gives credence to some of them. I'm not a fan of that on the podcast but at least it feels organic. In this book it's dated and forced. In two years no one will know about the podcast and these reenacted arguments will sound even more out of place than they do today.
Also, the dialog between Mike and Steve is stilted at times. Maybe it looks good on paper but spoken aloud it doesn't sound like they are having a conversation. In some places it sounds like Michael is mailing it in.
The book itself is okay. If you listened to the podcast you probably already heard 70% of the content. Still, well worth the credits if you have a ton of them like I do.

Throw Away Half of the Book

Aaarrrggghhh! It seems as if the first three hours of the book were about thanking people and saying how qualified the Good Doctor is. And that is followed with about another hour or two of stupidly-simple basic information about what a heart is and how it works. Duh! But then he gets into statins and other remedies for heart ailments and redeems himself. Kinda. This could have been boiled down to an hour or two (max) had he not tried to write a "book". Full of filler.

Story
In early 1970, artist Ralph Steadman went to America in search of work and found more than he bargained for. At the Kentucky Derby, he met a former Hell's Angel, one Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson wrote later that "The rest of that day blurs into madness. The rest of that night, too. Steadman was lucky to get out of Louisville without serious injuries, and I was lucky to get out at all." Thus began a 30-year friendship and a working relationship that gave birth to what became known as Gonzo Journalism.

This book provided an interesting back story to some historic gonzo incidents. The author tries too hard to sound like a better writer than he is but the stories are interesting nevertheless. The narrator does an exceptional job.

Ken Kesey says that he never watched the movie because he disagreed with Jack Nicholson playing the lead character. The book is definitely better than the movie. It's art.
Ken breathes heavily in parts and that is distracting but it is interesting to hear how the author reads his own words.
