Story
Arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig never believed his crimes were hanging offenses, until he found himself with a noose around his neck, dropping through a trap door, and falling into...a government job? Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may be an impossible task. Worse, the new Postmaster could swear the mail is talking to him.

Sir Terry Pratchett Wrote Liquid Light
Reviewed: 06-09-25
If you have not yet begun to read Pratchett's "DiscWorld" series, Begin as soon as you can!
GOING POSTAL is a splendid book. There are dozens of other titles, each as good or better than the one before.
I began with THE COLOR OF MAGIC, followed by THE LIGHT FANTASTIC. You may prefer to search online for the several Orders of Reading DiscWorld books, or Orders of Reading the books of Sir Terry Pratchett. I read them in the order in which they reached the USA from the United Kingdom.
Going Postal is guaranteed to fascinate you, introduce many fascinating characters, Some of whom you will find in other Pratchett books. If you have not had a Classical Education.,it doesn't matter. You will laugh until you weep.
Look for them used. Some few readers sell or donate their books after they have read them. Most Pratchett fans keep their books for rereading purposes. I no longer lend my books. I let friends come and stay to read my books here in my home.

A nightmarish danger threatens from the other side of reality. . . . Armed with only a frying pan and her common sense, young witch-to-be Tiffany Aching must defend her home against the monsters of Fairyland. Luckily she has some very unusual help: the local Nac Mac Feegle—aka the Wee Free Men—a clan of fierce, sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men.

Tiffany Aching
Reviewed: 03-27-25
The Tiffany Aching Books are some of my favorite Terry Pratchett books. I am enchanted by the Discworld Books.
I'm a woman who had Polio as a young child. The bones in my lower extremities have frequently limited what I was able to do in my life. I have lived with pain and malformed bones, many different kinds of braces, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs. It's my good fortune to love to read.
I love Tiffany's healthy body and freedom to do all that she does in the parts of her life I see in the books. Her life is so active, her living with the sheep so wonderful!
All this and intelligence and being a true Witch as well! That's just the best part of her life! I like the character, I love her kindness and tenacity, her ability and willingness to work hard at whatever she is called on to do! I genuinely admire her! What a lovely addition she is to my list of strong women characters in literature.

Arriving in Cairo for another thrilling excavation season, Amelia is relaxing in a well-earned bubble bath in her elegant hotel suite in Cairo when a man with a knife protruding from his back staggers into the bath chamber and utters a single word - "murder" - before collapsing on the tiled floor, dead. Among the few possessions he carried was a sheet of paper with Amelia's name and room number.

I Am Sad
Reviewed: 02-13-24
I don’t am sad that the publishing house was so greedy to squeeze money out of a dead Elizabeth Peter’s that they continued the series with a ghostwriter who barely has a grasp of the stories that have come before.
I knew as I was by reading that the author was not the author I’ve been reading all these years. Authors are not interchangeable like Lego Blocks. Save your money. Buy some Laurie King or Terry Pratchett. Read Egyptian Mythology. Don’t waste your time on drivel.

Splendid Diskworld Novel From the WITCHES Group
Reviewed: 07-16-23
I love the WITCHES every time I hear them. Each and every one. The only major flaw herein is that the person reading DEATH needs to go and listen to DEATH in the older readings, so he doesn't sound like a weenie actor who has heard the voice of DEATH described, but didn't understand the language in which it was described. If one is narrating Pratchett, don't miscast DEATH, San Vimes, or Vetanari.

Story
Tiffany Aching has spent years studying with senior witches, and now she is on her own. As the witch of the Chalk, she performs the bits of witchcraft that aren't sparkly, aren't fun, don't involve any kind of wand, and that people seldom ever hear about: She does the unglamorous work of caring for the needy. But someone - or something - is igniting fear, inculcating dark thoughts and angry murmurs against witches.

Another Pratchett Gem, Reread Again
Reviewed: 07-09-23
I have looked the Writings of Sir Terry from the day I came upon his first DiscWorld book years and years ago. It was a twofer, both being novels a see but on the thin side. They were "The Color of Magic" and "The Light Fantastic." I asked the bookseller if he had more Pratchett, and he said he knew nothing about the author, but had received a dozen copies of the book I had, and possibly more to come. Time passed, and book followed book for years. I find I have aged some, reading Sir Terry, but reading Himself is a grand way to get to seventy-three.

Story
After a health scare, 77-year-old Barbara goes to convalesce in the sleepy Somerset village of Winsleigh Green with her sister, Pauline, who is now a widow. The sisters are like chalk and cheese - Barbara, outspoken and aloof and Pauline, good natured and homely - so it’s not long before the tension starts to rise. But when Pauline accidentally knocks down a vagrant who goes by the name of Bisto Mulligan, the ladies find themselves with another houseguest.

The Old Girl’s Network is a fun little piece of fiction. It was just a random choice after hearing samples from 3 other books. The characters are mostly not how they seem, but most of a summer, leaves them changed for the better. They are kinder, nicer group.

This is a land of long memory and hidden corners, a land that had known Vlad the Impaler, a land from whose churchyards the shades creep. When Queen Marie calls, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are as dubious as they are reluctant. But a young girl is involved, and a beautiful queen. Surely it won't take long to shine light on this unlikely case of what would seem to be strigoi? Or, as they are known in the West...vampires.

A pleasant mystery with almost too much detail. A more ruthless Editor .might have helped. All things considered, a book approaching the quality I have come to expect from Laurie R. King. Maybe 3° off the mark. I will read it again in a few months and rethink this review. I am enchanted by the Holmes/Russell books.

Story
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items, and, soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of slavery.

It has opened me up like a flower to the love handed down from my female ancestors, my great grandmother, grandmother and mother to me. These are not just dresser scarfs and linens. These are generations of love.
There is so much more to be learned from this book about how women have communicated through time to other women via needlework. I am so grateful to the author.
What a gift this is to me.
