Story
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Mythology Retold For a New Generation
Reviewed: 01-31-24
The author brings the story of Achilles to life with this passionate retelling of the legend. The characters are so real and their story so powerful, I was spellbound, especially by the ending. The narration is a chef’s kiss. The writing is poetic and moving. After I recover from this lingering tale, I just may have to give a listen to another one of this author’s titles.

Story
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Story
As a child, Sheila Wise Rowe was bused across town to a majority white school, and she experienced the racist lie that one group is superior to all others. We experience ongoing racial trauma as this lie is perpetuated by the action or inaction of the government, media, viral videos, churches, and within families of origin. In contrast, scripture declares that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made.

A book that teaches, inspires, and indeed, heals
Reviewed: 11-18-20
Sheila Wise Rowe has written a beautiful, insightful book that helps people of color identify racial trauma through true and relatable stories of others. It also provides opportunities for reflection and application all grounded in scripture. Well-worth the read.

Story
Imagine it were possible to bring the characters from a book to life. Not like when you listen to an audiobook with such enchantment that the characters seem to jump off the pages and into your bedroom...but for real. Imagine they could actually climb out of the pages and into our world. Then imagine if those characters brought their world into ours.

Inkheart is a treasure, a love letter to the story, the reader, and the writer. The performance is phenomenal. I admit that it was slightly slow starting, but I am glad I didn't give up.

Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

I teach college English, and I recommend that educators consider using Thomas's salient novel in their classrooms. This is a well-crafted novel that engages readers in critical thinking about the world we live in today.
