The story was tedious and boring with no deep meaning. I read it twice thinking I had missed something important.

A fascinating story based on facts from a not-so long-ago time when Oklahoma was once Indian Territory.

The Briar Club has become my favorite novel: a character study of female friendships and of composite happenings during the 1950’s in Washington D.C. Best of all, the telling of the tale is compelling, and the characters are complex. I wanted to live in this novel’s story being told to me.

This delightful story is about willfull women the 1800s, pursuing their fascination. The intricate story is flowered with botany and upstairs/downstairs life in Edinburgh, Scotland. Loved it!

As a fan, I have admired Ann Patchett’s writing, but this book seemed tedious and without an interesting storyline.

Such a fine author is Jacqueline Winspear. I have read all of her books. Maisie Dobbs is my favorite. Hearing this novel read by Orlagh Cassidy makes it extra special.

At the book’s beginning, I had a hard time justifying the expected village wholesomeness, yet I was was quickly captivated by the way she used the Paston Treasure as a Trojan horse to cleverly transport clues and new information between characters and this puzzling plot. Louise Penny’s theme of forgiveness climbs bravely through this thoughtful novel. She has another winner.

The author’s characters are obviously well known by him, and he listens to them as the plot unfolds. Each character is benignly human and comical in their individual ways. A delightful mystery about middle-class Brits with their biscuits and lemon-drizzle cake. Bravo!

Honest and guttsy

Martha Beck's personal story was gripping and fascinating. I suppose she will be shunned by her family for her honest account, but it needed to be told. I admired her exploration and objectivity in discussing secret family matters. Thank you for writing when most people would have stuffed it in their emotions.
