Story
Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Pure fun!

A joy to read and a joy to listen to. I love the early era pre-prequels EU books, where the creators were figuring things out and exploring the Galaxy far far Away. The author draws from the classic pulp well and balances the fantasy and science fiction elements of the franchise perfectly. This one introduces some elements that were to become fan favorites, including Dathomir, the witches, the Nightsisters, Zinge and the Iron Fist which figured so well in the X-Wing books, and it was a delight to see Han and Leia getting together.
The narrator was perfect, and I dearly hope Children of the Jedi and Planet of Twilight are made into unabridged audios next, and that this narrator is tapped to read. Possibly the same with Truce at Bakura.

A long-awaited addition to my audio library!

An excellent production! I've long been wanting to hear more EU/Legends SW in full audio format, and I dearly hope more are coming!
I'm not a fan of matching Thrawn's voice to the cartoon - I much prefer the resonate and noble voice from the trilogy and Hand of Thrawn, but I tell myself he started out with more of a Chiss accent and cultivated an Imperial mode of speech later.
Here's to hearing more - with hopes that the New Jedi Order might also see production!!

A complete story!
Reviewed: 10-30-23
Keyes normally writes series, so I was putting off reading until the next one was out. How surprised was I to find when I finally broke down and read that it was a complete story.
As always, Keyes keeps the action accelerated and doles out information about what the larger stakes are in small increments. This could be a case where mystery box writing works.
There were some unanswered questions remaining at the end, about the origins and powers of certain characters and what made the world the way it is, but it ended fairly well for the main characters. The decadent court where one main character must play investigative politics contrasts with the coming invasion of a hostile alien power by an alliance that is planning mutual betrayal before the battle is even won.
I can easily imagine a few one shot follow ups exploring this world further.

Story
This audiobook collects Wellman’s John Thunstone and Lee Corbet stories, written between 1943 and 1979. These stories combine the mystical and horrific with traditional Southern folk tales and legends. These stories also reveal a post-World War II modernism that make them much more then pulp romanticism. The paranoia and cynicism of modern weird icons, such as The X-files, may well have had their genesis in the pulp musings of Manly Wade Wellman.
