Today's psychologist is apt to be very different from the image most people conjure up when asked to picture one - an image that almost always suggests Sigmund Freud or someone like him, complete with leather couch.

Pretty great "Intro" to Psychology

I liked this series of lectures a lot actually, it was very informative, the teacher was good at presenting, and there was a good amount of detail of varying topics. I do wish that there was more nuanced information provided, because it was very generalized to mostly just cater to straight, cis, men and women. Gender and Sexual Identity was a topic that was covered, but it was brief and not mentioned again throughout the series, and I believe there were many opportunities to present interesting information that sorta just fell flat. Overall though, if you don't care about that (which, I'm not sure why you would even want to read this then) it's great :)

Revolutionary for the mindless, encouraging for the educated.

Personally, I didn't really enjoy this book, nor did I feel that I learned anything from it. It is worth mentioning that I know quite a lot of psychology and how the mind works, so perhaps that's why, but I can see how this book could be useful for someone who isn't very educated as an intro to self-help. The story was quite boring for me as I have zero interest in sports, or self-righteous sob stories. I understand the importance of these topics for setting the premise, but keeping them going on and on throughout the book got tiring and made it very clear this books target audience was for "dude bros". I guess to summarize, if you think you're smart, this book will probably be useful to you, if you think you aren't that smart, I wouldn't try and bother, and if that sentence confused you, go with the first portion.

Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Informative and Enlightening.

This is a great book for people wanting to learn more about the effects of PTSD, trauma, and various mental health issues, as well as their lasting effects on the body. The book is written in a sort-of autobiographical point of view that goes over things from personal accounts, stories, data, and more. Even if you're an expert, you'll enjoy it from a story-telling perspective as well as being entertained by the "discovery" of the authors findings and such.
