Story
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Nothing makes you hate Monday's more than living under the capitalist boot. But in all seriousness the history of debt and the myth of the barter economy is a great read.

Story
As the Empire reels from its critical defeats at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance—now a fledgling New Republic—presses its advantage by hunting down the enemy’s scattered forces before they can regroup and retaliate. But above the remote planet Akiva, an ominous show of the enemy’s strength is unfolding. Out on a lone reconnaissance mission, pilot Wedge Antilles watches Imperial Star Destroyers gather like birds of prey circling for a kill, but he’s taken captive before he can report back to the New Republic leaders.

Feels "Forced"
Reviewed: 04-04-23
I have listened to many of the Stars Wars books, expanded universe and canon, and even compared to some of the New Republic books this series is okay, but not engaging. Typically I am a very generous reviewer and always a huge Star Wars fan, so I don't criticize lightly. This series felt like they were shoe-horning a backstory into the new trilogy (which is exactly what they are doing) but it seems inorganic. I wanted to listen to this series to learn some of the new canon, so I almost felt like this was homework. It's not terrible, but didn't keep my attention and I found myself distracted and missing sections, often not going back to catch up. The writing always has a young adult feel to it, which is obviously great if that is your audience, but I found it less than captivating compared to books likes the Thrawn series (which you should go read, the new and old trilogies). Overall not bad, but not great. I confess I am not a huge fan of the new trilogy, so this is just par for the course.

Story
A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

Dunk and Egg is a fun little slice of Westeros. It’s a great companion to anyone longing for more Song of Ice and Fire while waiting for Winds of Winter.

Throughout history great generals have done what their enemies have least expected. Instead of direct, predictable attack, they have deceived, encircled, outflanked, out-thought, and triumphed over often superior armies commanded by conventional thinkers.

Greatly Informative and Contextual
Reviewed: 08-17-22
As someone who has read about Napoleon, Mao, Gengis Khan, Rome, and WW2, this book was extremely informative. It offered great context on exactly *how* these great battles occurred. Given the length of the book it doesn’t provide step by step detail of every battle and does a good job of keeping the material easy to follow, not bombarding the listener with numbers and figures easy to forget. Found this in the plus catalog and honestly I would’ve purchased it.
If you are a fan of history and looking for some additional details on these conquests I would recommend reading.

A Gripping Tale From Start To Finish
Reviewed: 09-24-21
I've heard of this book and when I noticed it was first published in 1960 I was *not* expecting it to hold up. But like the late, great Jerry Orbach, when I'm wrong I say I'm wrong. This reading held my interested for all 57 hours and 11 minutes. It honestly left me wanting more. Shirer does a masterful job of of writing an objective and informative story of the Third Reich. Listening to this book in 2021 it's hard to ignore the overtones of how nations continue to make the same mistakes over and again. The only thing this book does not include (and this is not a criticism) are the graphic hour by hour details of specific battles and military engagements. That being said, it didn't need to. I didn't know what to expect when I made this purchase but it exceeded any expectations I had. If you are interested in the story of Nazi Germany and are concerned a book this old will not be engaging think again.

Story
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

Great storytelling and well researched
Reviewed: 06-09-21
Especially compared to some other books profiling pirates in this era, Woodward does an excellent job. Providing character depth and insight to the geopolitical climate these men (and women) were acting in paints a clear picture. There are some parts of the book where they do throw numbers at you; especially regarding ship weight and armament, currency and coin conversion. However it’s not difficult to follow. Narrator has panache avoids being a dry read. Highly enjoyable mateys!
