Story
Amanda Hale and Tom Burke star in a brand new BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Charlotte Brontë's most beloved novel, adapted by Rachel Joyce. Orphan Jane learns at an early age that self-control is the surest means of retaining self-respect in adversity. It is a lesson that serves her well in the years ahead as she endures the misery of life with her cruel, uncaring aunt, followed by the harsh regime at Lowood Institution, a charity school for poor children.

Because of his tortured character and rugged masculinity, it was difficult connecting with the part of Rochester as being read in female voice (however altered). While filing through Audible’s many offerings of “Jane Eyre,”searching for a version with both female and male readers, I came across this radiant gem. What a transfixing performance! While listening to Audible, I’m usually working out or puttering around, engaged in life’s mundane chores…until I clicked on this. After 5 or so minutes of listening, I walked into the family room, snuggled into the squishy pillows on the couch, and there I remained — immersed in this dramatic, absorbing, and spot-on interpretation/performance of “Jane Eyre” until the last spoken word. Had Charlotte Brontë joined me on my pillowy couch, I imagine she would have been pleased.
When you next have the luxury of free time, do yourself a favor and click the play button on this performance of “Jane Eyre.”

Story
Eight months since losing her mother in the Spanish flu outbreak of 1919, 21-year-old Lillian Carter's life has completely fallen apart. For the past six years, under the moniker Angelica, Lillian was one of the most sought-after artists' models in New York City, with statues based on her figure gracing landmarks from the Plaza Hotel to the Brooklyn Bridge

Ugh.

Went from “Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil” to this. Thought it was a novel about the Gilded Age. I was wrong. I tried to get past the breathy, faux-innocence of the reader’s voice. But one too many references to the draping of cloth over a nude female model body and I was out.

Story
Linda Martin understands what is to be lonely: her parents died when she was young, and she was raised in an orphanage. When she is hired as a governess to the orphaned young Philippe, Comte de Valmy, Linda finds a kindred spirit in the lonely little boy. But Philippe is the heir to a vast estate in Savoy, and his dangerously handsome uncle may be willing to kill to ensure that Philippe never inherits it.

Intelligent writing. Wonderfully talented reader.

Mary Stewart. Why did it take me so long to find you? Coaches Waiting is so much more than a well-crafted and suspenseful mystery.
The writing is of a wordsmith and literary artisan — so difficult to find in contemporary works. The text is sophisticated without pomposity, and a real treat for those who appreciate reading and finding new words, colloquialisms, and references from history and other cultures.
Ms. Stewart brings the characters to life, evoking emotion, and drawing the reader in. For me, the book’s only flaw was its occasional Harlequin vibe.
The reader is wonderfully talented and exceptional. I switch between Kindle and Audible. Usually I prefer reading over listening, but this was an exception. I found that I preferred the Audible reader’s voice, interpretation, and inflection over my own — particularly for the main character.
Great read/performance!

Story
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Story
Written only months before Austen's death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited, and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the humorous, charming (and slightly wild!) Sidney Parker. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to the would-be coastal resort of the eponymous title, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make, and the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success.

Jane Austen?
Reviewed: 04-12-20
Are we certain this is Jane Austen’s writing? The cleverness, wit, and text typical of Austen were missing. It read more like a gentrified Harlequin than an Austen piece — with a hurried and disappointing finish.
Either it isn’t Austen, or she was too ill to build and polish her story.
