Listen to Jim Dale Instead
Reviewed: 12-01-24
Stephen Fry is an excellent actor, but his women's voices are screechy and borderline offensive. It's not an uncommon problem with male narrators, unfortunately. Listen to Jim Dale instead.

Story
Javier Perez is a hustler from a family of hustlers. He learns from an early age how to play the game to his own advantage, how his background—murdered drug dealer dad, single cash-strapped mom, best friend serving time for gang activity—can be a key to doors he didn’t even know existed. This kind of story, molded in the right way, is just what college admissions committees are looking for, and a full academic scholarship to a prestigious university brings Javi one step closer to his dream of becoming a famous writer.

Incredibly compelling novel and performance. Asks big, necessary, and timely questions about the stories we as a society reward. Highly recommend.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Felt like being back in high school math
Reviewed: 03-27-24
Narrator did a great job, but this one wasn't for me. The MC is a middle school science teacher and it felt painfully like being back in school. Every chapter felt like being walked through one of those..."If a train leaves Cleveland at noon at x miles per hour" problems. If you like that, you'll love this. If you'd rather get flung into the abyss of space than revisit that time in your life... I'd avoid this book.

Story
What’s the cost of comfort? In The Fever, playwright, actor, and cultural icon Wallace Shawn (My Dinner with André, The Designated Mourner) captures the crisis of conscience of a privileged American traveler visiting a war-torn country. Faced with the disparity between her rarified world and the real world, she can’t help but wonder if she’s part of the solution or part of the problem.

A Must Listen

Stunning. This piece asks huge and necessary questions for this moment. It’s dense, demanding the listener engage. In a world of too easily digestible junk food, this is a wonderful feast that demands to be shared. More than worth the work to digest this work.
