Story
Britain. The near-future. A right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills—the Sanctity of Marriage Act, which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single. But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives—monitoring every word, every minor disagreement…and will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honor and obey.

thought provoking
Reviewed: 05-02-25
entertaining, thought provoking, a great read that is hard to put down. I also found it scary. i saw many parallels of the USA in 2025. the "futurist" fiction books are feeling less & less fiction. it was still an entertaining read.

Story
The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

I made it through 5 hrs of this book. I felt as if the author was glorifying rape, making it sexy, like a woman would enjoy & want it. At 5 hrs, that's all there were, sex scene after sex scene.

This is a beautiful and truly satisfying ending to the series (which I could not stop listening to). Butler has a way of transcending the racialized, sexualized body which forces the reader to pay attention to the ways that humans identify and resist difference in violent ways. Not only beautifully written but deeply insightful.
