Welp, I hate it. The story itself is interesting but it’s hard to look past the weird PETA-ish vibes. The author makes it very obvious they have an objection to the pacific octopus being in an aquarium, they then mention how unfair they think it is that a neighbor’s canaries were only allowed outside in a cage. They’d never taste “real” freedom. It’s laughable to me considering the author then has the main character befriend and feed a feral cat.

You cannot routinely bash aquariums, aviculture enthusiasts, exotic pets, etc. all while supporting the feeding of feral cats. Cats kill 8+ billion animals a year, in the US alone. They are one of the most costly invasive species in the world and have been the cause of over 63 extinctions. For someone who seems to be such an advocate of wildlife the author sure doesn’t know much about the plights they’re actually facing; cats being major one.

I really couldn’t care less about the scoffing, the eye rolling, the people who laugh at this review. I’m right. There is a profuse amount of data out their backing up my claim. I no longer support authors who support an invasive species responsible for decimating wildlife, spreading zoonotic diseases, and costing us millions. Fictional or not.

Fantastic! Shocking, disheartening, and hard to accept, but a must-read. Save our insects, save our world.
