Story
LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. These men were good because they had to be to survive.

This may be the most honest book ever written in the history of mankind, but something raised the shorthairs up on my neck. Couldn't get past the first chapter.

Story
Uncommon Valor is a look into the formation and operation of an advanced Special Forces recon company during the Vietnam War. Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most covert US military unit in its time and contained only volunteers from such elite units as the Army's Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and Air Force Air Commandos. SOG warriors operated in small teams, going behind enemy lines in Laos and Cambodia and along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, tasked with performing special reconnaissance, sabotaging North Vietnamese Army ammunition, and far more.

Story
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

I've lived my entire life watching Al Pacino-Serpico is the first drive in movie I remember seeing as a kid. Throughout the years Ive always looked forward to anything he's been in-sometimes great and sometimes not so much-but all that has ever mattered was simply that he was in it. Hearing his voice tell his story has been a complete joy-hearing him describe his successes and even moreso his shortcomings makes this more than just another bio for me-spoken with such emotion at times, and at times with such honesty and vulnerability, this was and is a story I completely enjoyed!

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

First time listen to this author/character, refreshing actually-very believable storyline. It's nice sometimes to step back from a story without super sleuths and outlandish plots-except when thats what you're looking for-

Story
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Great collection of great stories-it’s too bad that the days of finding a diamond in the rough are mostly gone-now you have to be on guard buying from “reputable” (Ha!) dealers that are known to dissect expensive guitars, then build fakes using the butchered components-very careful to keep components with traceable nomenclature spread out on the fakes enough to deceive all but the most serious buyer/collector. Such is life tho!

Not a casual read
Reviewed: 01-01-22
I’m not sure I would say that I thoroughly enjoyed this story, “endured” might be a closer description. Going through my own adventures with that clever demon alcohol, reaching my own tipping point where it became clear it was time to make my choice of getting out of that hole or climbing out, hearing the author’s story all too often felt like I was hearing my own. “Like watching a train wreck” also came to mind-I knew what was going to happen at each bend of the story but had to listen anyway. I can’t imagine anyone reading this without having a personal connection of some sort-it’s raw truth screaming like an exposed nerve. Books of this nature speak so clearly to the universality of addiction-which is a part of so many lives, directly or otherwise-it’s therapeutic both to the author and perhaps even more so for the reader such as myself. Commonality can be comforting-just knowing we are not alone, that others have had similar struggles, can make a huge difference to someone just looking to make it one more day. Some might classify this story and others like it as self help-not me. While there are bookshelves aplenty with “book of the month” drivel offering ways to blame one’s situation-whatever that may be-on someone or something else, Girl Walks Out of a Bar is to me, an example of a saying I think of on a daily basis: “When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging .”

So-so overall, can’t remember an ending to a story that was as lackluster as this one-seems like the author got tired of both the plot and characters and threw in the towel.
