I simply adored Yardley in the series and was so excited to get his backstory. Alma was my kind of woman, strong and knew who and what she wanted. Yardley was a perfect fit. I love the way the romance didn't overpower the story as is the case with all of the other parts in the main series. It added a new layer of depth to things between him and Sebastian and Fannie as well. It can be read as a standalone but is so much better as part of the Witch Trials world. I recommend them all. The narrator did a wonderful job, just loved her voices to bits.

Story
Every artist needs a muse, or three if they are superstitious. Muses require care. They are far too delicate to wander freely in the world. A painter, known to his young captives as, the artist, has constructed an idyllic cage to keep the world out, and where his carefully selected muses can flutter about, inspiring his work. Detective Jack Lancaster is no stranger the horrors human monsters inflict on the innocent people in his city.

Great Addition to the Genre
Reviewed: 09-18-20
The collector/serial killer genre is one of my favorites. While many have similar feels - a killer (usually an older wealthy man) collects victims (usually young women) and then depravity ensues. Typically one woman escapes to tell the story and it ends there. So to respond to the other harsh review, yes, it's a collector/killer book, and yes, it sounds like many of them in the opening section. I hope if listeners are considering this one they won't let that jade them because this one takes a wild swing in the last two parts that move it well past where most in the genre go, exploring something with the victim in a way I've not seen before. I don't want to spoil anything but that was a bent twist on empowerment. WOW. I think the just the facts tone of the narrator worked for the story in many ways. I hope there will be more. I'd love to see what the future held for Lark and Jack.

This is such a unique zombie story! First, it's told from the perspective of the zombie and that's something you don't see very often at all. But what really makes is special, is that the zombie has a personality that makes this hilarious while at the same time gruesome. It's a fun blend that I simply adored. I enjoyed watching as he progressed from waking up a zombie through acceptance and... so much fun and gore. There was enough gruesome parts to satisfy the horror fan in me too. I am exited to read more this author soon.
The narrator had a wonderful reading voice, adding great emotion the story. I enjoyed having him read to me. :)

I was engrossed in this fantastic tale from the very start. It has a classic fantasy feel with a lot of whimsy reminding me of a more in-depth Alice in Wonderland. I wasn't familiar with the Bulgarian/Slavic myths so it was fresh and original and magical and just wonderful.
Theo is a great hero who both adults and younger readers will find easy to connect with and cheer for. His friend Pavel, along with Diva, and Boo made a great party as they navigated through more challenging parts of the quest to save Nia and slay the dragon.
The word building was excellent, as the layers of the story unfolded and the quest became more complex I sank deeper in the magical spell of the words. It was a truly beautiful experience to read this story. The mix of edge of your set tension and fantasy was perfect. The messages were strong. The storytelling superb. I highly recommend this to fans of fantasy of all ages.

Roma absolutely nailed the terror sensation in this book. I love the rotating point of views that gave me glimpses into several groups as the most unique apocalypse ever unfolded. The characters themselves were also unique and richly portrayed as real people unlike the usual suspects you find in an apoc story. The chapters ends were masterfully done to draw you into just one more chapter with their ahhhhh what’s next moments. The detail was so vivid and painted a truly creepy picture. I certainly hope with the ending that another part is already in the works… If you think you’ve seen every apocalypse scenario I challenge you to guess where this one is going. You’ll ‘bee’ wrong.

I love Champ! I've always had a fascination with cryptids and lake monsters are a favorite. There is a real sense of dread as you feel for Mike, well I did. I have a lot of unrealistic fears, spiders, the dark, etc so it was easy for me to empathize with him. Roma has a way with taking stories places as they end that you will be delighted and surprised by. I loved how she brought the monster to life in this one and connected me with everyone(thing) in the story.
