Story
After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she describes how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset.

Something for everyone and anyone who has struggled with motivation to participate in life, work, and play. Clear suggestions and warnings about there being no 'quick fixes' and magical outcomes to living life more fully and kindly. in short, growth takes effort and some days will be better than others. I will definitely be recommending this to friends, family, and colleagues.

Story
Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

A Must-Read/Listen for Everyone

This book was challenging, not because it wasn't well-written, but because it challenges Americans to examine a painful past and see the effects of our collective and individual choices in terms of who and what we view as worthy of our efforts, compassion, and kindness. Anyone working for, within, or in conjunction with the judicial system should read and seriously consider the perspective and evidence carefully delineated in the book. Thank you, Michelle Alexander, your work has deeply moved me and I waited way too long to read it.

Story
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Wonderful Story, Okay Book
Reviewed: 03-27-22
The life story of actress Heddy Lamarr is itself inspiring and the book does a nice job of conveying the challenges of being a smart, beautiful woman in the 1930's and 40's. As written, it's just "okay" and maybe it's the problem of the narrator attempting to "act out" the various characters, but it would have been better to simply read it rather than trying to do an Austrian accent, or American accent, for the characters. It sounded cliche and stereotypic for a story that was anything but cliche and stereotypic.

Thank you, Michelle Obama, for sharing the story of your journey. It made me laugh and cry and feel deeply appreciative of the sacrifices made by families in politics. It also was incredibly motivating - I'm going to pay more attention to small moments where encouragement might make all the difference.
