Story
Opposites attack! When the Magelord Minalan the Spellmonger’s two apprentices, Tyndal and Rondal, were knighted after the battle of Timberwatch, they were dubbed Knights Magi: A new class of nobility for distinguished High Magi. Designed to combine the pursuit of arcane knowledge with the noble aspirations of chivalry, it elevated them above common warmage...in theory. The problem was they had no idea how to be a Knight Mage...because no one had ever been one before.

Best of the cadet books

I'm not sure if this is a cadet line really, but I really enjoyed this book and don't agree with the negative reviews.

Story
From the moment Dara of Westwood spied the Silver Headed Raptor nesting in Rundeval Peak, the precocious redheaded 12-year-old girl was enchanted. The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

Certainly Not My Favorite

I love the Spellmonger series, love John Lee's narrations, and have listened to the whole series at least a handful of times completely through. Hawkmaiden was not enjoyable. It's probably because it's written from the point of view of a 13 year old girl, which I am absolutely not interested in whatsoever. It seems strange to have such an unarguably adult series divert to the perspective of a teenage girl, and honestly I'm not sure who would be it's target audience. The whole experience was uncomfortable and if I weren't such a fan of the series I would have stopped and refunded the whole book.
If you're an avid Spellmonger fan then perhaps it's worth a read. Personally I don't feel like I gained anything from it overall and would have happily skipped it had I known what a waste of time it was. It didn't add to the story or lore of the series, and unless you're a female and into this sort of preteen "twilight-esk" high school drama; go ahead and save your tokens or money and just skip the cadet series of Hawkmaiden / Lenodara. Luckily the rest of the Spellmonger series is awesome, except maybe Court Mage; but that's a different review...

When Tyndal and Rondal, journeymen wizards and knights errant, travel to southern Alshar to rescue a helpless boy and his mother, it sets in motion a series of events that will shake the foundations of the Five Duchies! While they are beginning their quest against the vast criminal gang known as the Brotherhood of the Rat, the two knights encounter the Cats of Enultramar, a family of shadowmagi and high-class thieves who help them discover a plot to attack the rich lands and prosperous people of Alshar, from the Wilderlands to the Great Bay...and only Rondal and Tyndal can stop them.

Another wonderful book in the Spellmonger series. Shadowmage definately makes up for what the previous book Court Mage lacked and I'm pleasantly hooked on the series again. Tindle and Randal are my favorite spin-offs in this series.

Aren has lived by the rules all his life. He's never questioned it; that's just the way things are. But then his father is executed for treason, and he and his best friend, Cade, are thrown into a prison mine, doomed to work until they drop. Unless they can somehow break free.... But what lies beyond the prison walls is more terrifying still. Rescued by a man who hates him yet is oath-bound to protect him, pursued by inhuman forces, Aren slowly accepts that everything he knew about his world was a lie.

Good but not great. Certainly worth a listen.

Nothing incredibly original here, but it was certainly worth a read. I was very pleased with the length and enjoyed the world building process. The narrator was also very pleasant, however at times it could have been better. There are times when you can tell he was further away from his microphone / recorder than normal or you can hear noise from what seems like the turning on a page as he reads. Really not a big deal and the performance was still great, but it certainly wasn't the best.

Story
With the south in full rebellion, the goblins stirring on the northern frontier, and the summer capital being run by a corrupt baron and a gang of thugs, things could be better. But those aren’t the worst of her problems: Pentandra is learning how to live with her new husband, Arborn, while the town is driven to distraction by an incarnate sex goddess who is organizing all of the whores, a mopey spellmonger, a nun addicted to gambling, a prude sent by the queen, undead skulking through the shadows, and a mysterious blind girl shows up in her office claiming to be her new apprentice.

Least favorite of the series

I love the spellmonger series, but this latest book really wasn't that great. I find the constant "sex themes" needless and at most times tasteless. Even in this book the tiresome details around sex fail to lend much to the story and I find myself questioning whether I'd reread the series or book itself, not wanting to have to put up with the overdone sex theme.

Not impressed

The story line jumped ahead at awkward times, leaving the characters undeveloped and lacking in personality. The main character was lifeless and uninteresting, multiple times leaving me questioning why I was still listening to the book. I would not recommend.
