Rambling but finally got my attention
Reviewed: 03-27-24
It took 4 hours before I knew what in the world the story might be about. I loved Tana French’s first two books, Broken Harbor was okay, they’ve been going downhill since. I did finally feel some engagement with the characters and the story with this one but for goodness sake, too much pointless conversation and setting the scene. Sorry to say this will be my last pre-order of Tana’s work, I will wait for something with great reviews next time.

Story
More than a decade ago, Mira fled her small, segregated hometown in the south to forget. With every mile she traveled, she distanced herself from her past: from her best friend Celine, mocked by their town as the only white girl with black friends; from her old neighborhood; from the eerie Woodsman plantation rumored to be haunted by the spirits of slaves; from the terrifying memory of a ghost she saw that terrible day when a dare-gone-wrong almost got Jesse—the boy she secretly loved—arrested for murder. But now Mira is back to attend Celine's wedding at the plantation.

Hard subject but beautiful book
Reviewed: 02-28-23
Writing from my perspective as a middle class white woman from up North…. I love books that shine perspective on a life experience that is vastly different from my own. This book gave me a gut sense of the echoes of slavery in our current times in a way that nothing else has. Some of the scenes were painful to listen to but not so gruesome as to make me fast forward, and it felt necessary to hear them out. Beautiful narration, excellent writing, ghost story/love story blending in with the serious subject matter. Definitely in my top 5 audiobooks, & one I will listen to again.

I was looking for light suspense, something easy, absorbing and distracting. I will forget this story in a week but it was exactly what I needed right now. Enjoyed the story, loved the narration.

Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Narration was extraordinary! She deserves an award just for reading so many hours and keeping voices straight for a huge cast of characters.
Middlemarch won’t be to everyone’s taste but I am a reader of Thomas Hardy & Jane Austin. Highly recommend looking at the list of characters on Wikipedia, helps keep them straight. Even when I missed some details however, everything became clear eventually. I stayed absorbed with the story throughout. Loved the sense of history and truly extraordinary writing.
This is my first time listening to a classic on Audible... I will definitely be looking for more.

Story
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

I enjoyed this even more than Thirteenth Tale. One issue with audio.... my hearing is not perfect and it took awhile to discern the name ”Daunt” from “Vaughn”. Very confusing but once I realized my error all was well. Just a heads up to any other listeners with imperfect hearing.

Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. I made it through 3 hours & was not only bored but irritated. I didn’t mind the narrator. Total lack of plot & unappealing characters was the issue. Love all of Moriarty‘s other novels, but this one does not compare.

Not Tana French’s best
Reviewed: 10-21-18
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Tana French’s other books, & was anxiously awaiting her latest. Her impeccably descriptive writing & realistic dialogue are still there in The Witch Elm. The plot & characters however, do not come close to her previous books. There were several patches which were just boring. I didn’t particularly like, and certainly will not miss, any of the characters. The plot “twists “ feel more like meanderings, and there was way too much filler that did not move the plot forward. If this is your first Tana French read/listen, do not be discouraged from reading her other books. But if you’re a French fan, maybe wait until this one is on sale.
The narrator was excellent and saved my rating from a mere overall 2 stars. Will be looking for more of his work.

Story
When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules - a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the Lone Star State, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders - a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman - have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment.

I love some of Attica Locke’s other books. This one dragged a bit & the side stories were long... suspense not there. That said I liked the characters and there were moments of fascinating insight her writing. But the narrator....perfect. Excellent voice , & I appreciate that he didn’t try to alter it significantly for female/other characters

Any additional comments?
I've enjoyed three of Liane Moriarty' s other books very much. This wasn't her best story, though it was still good. What ruined it for me was the narration. Other reviewers compare her to a GPS voice or their phone - that's exactly right. But it's not just her voice, which is actually lovely, it's her inflection. She uses the same strange pattern of inflection throughout, regardless of content. It was extremely distracting. I became used to it more than halfway through the book, but I still found myself having to think hard about the words that were being spoken at times; her inflection was bad enough as to interfere with meaning. I enjoy audiobooks because as a working mom, I like to have the story simply flow through my mind without the 'work' of reading. This narration did not accomplish that, it was exhausting. I noticed she narrates another of Moriarty' s books... I'll put in the effort to read that one instead.
