Thabk to all four of you for finding and then trying out these relationship exercises. You saved us from doing the research and I skipped the ones that didn’t work for you or didn’t appeal to me. That said, we’ve tried several of these with mixed results and are the better for it! If nothing else, a fun, fast listen!

This narrator is the wrong fit for this book. I so dislike her reading that I will be loathe to listen to another book she performs. She reads it like a dramatic performance, not a personal teaching narrative. I loved the other two happiness books that Gretchen Rubin read. I find this one difficult to appreciate and even just listen to with Kathe Mazur reading. What a shame.

Performance was fantastic. Reader does voices of characters exceptionally well, making this a far better listen than a book for reading. The story is painfully realistic, accurate, and thankfully, funny. If you want resolution, you won't get it, as is so often true in life. I enjoyed this book, and didn't love it. No life insights for me, though I appreciated the journey.

I found the description of the stroke experience and her treatment and recovery, interesting. After that, the seemingly endless spiritual discourse which was her "insight" was not particularly compelling. The author is also a bit monotone, and I had trouble getting through this relatively short listen. I should have quit after the first half of the book.
I gave it three stars because the information and awareness of the experience of a stroke victim are valuable. As for the psychological transformation the author experienced, I'm delighted for her, yet found it uninspiring both in writing and listening.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A reader who could pronounce the words correctly. It was tremendously grating to hear her say the name Moshe, as "Mo Shay". Likewise for Shiva, and a host of other words. This was the wrong narrator for this text.

What was most disappointing about Dara Horn’s story?

The story had no interesting develpments. Turned out to be trite, unsophisticated pablum. Such a shame.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator did not pronounce Jewish, Hebrew, or Yiddish words anywhere near correctly. A terrible narrator selection for this book.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There were several elements to the book which had potential to be fulfilling, but sadly, the work turned out the be a tremendous disappointment.

Any additional comments?

I cannot believe this was a PJ library adult selection. Usually, the PJ library books for kids are excellent. Terrible disappointment.

Listen to your socks speak and thank the, for their service before discarding them. You have got to be kidding me. Enough time wasted on such drivel. I've written enough to convey my perspective.

What did you love best about Duct Tape Parenting?

The author makes it clear why typical parenting approaches don't work and why hers is a better way to go in the long term. She inspired me to rethink and behave differently as a parent. I am a better mother for having listened to this book. More importantly, I can see that my children's lives will be far better served by this approach to parenting, A strong statement, yes, and I believe it because I could already see a difference before I'd even finished the book, and now even more so with a few weeks practice.

What does Vicki Hoefle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Passion, commitment, experience.
