Story
After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now, more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.

This book kept me interested and entertained throughout. It often switches quickly from present to past, but I had no problem tracking. Great characters.

Story
A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme. The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was richer, and far more complex, than anything the two men had imagined.

Excellent Adventure
Reviewed: 09-13-24
This is as good as "The Emerald Mile." The writing is often poetic but not so much that it gets in the way of the story. And it's full of adventure, but Fedarko takes time to put the adventure into a bigger context. Makes me want to backpack in the Grand Canyon...but on established trails. Going off trail in terrain like that seems to be for the slightly insane!

Story
The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

A bit dorky but with heart
Reviewed: 08-11-24
In the first couple of chapters I was rolling my eyes at the clichéd characters and situation. But after a bit I was smiling while still rolling my eyes, because the book has heart. By the end I was smiling and hardly rolling my eyes at all. This book is written as though a professor who taught a course on the John Muir Trail wanted to teach that course through a story. Once you accept that, it's much easier to enjoy the book and the characters.

Really well done. Graham does an excellent job of letting the reader in on her high points and low points, as well as her self-doubts and talking herself back onto the bike. She does an excellent of narrating too. Took a short while to get used to her accent, but after that period it was fine.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
As revelatory as Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, physician and award-winning author Louise Aronson’s Elderhood is an essential, empathetic look at a vital but often disparaged stage of life. For more than 5,000 years, 'old' has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. That means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Yet at the very moment that humans are living longer than ever before, we’ve made old age into a disease.

Well written book. Great ideas. Reading was excellent. But the book went on far too long for my tastes.
