Story
Reacher is on a Greyhound bus, minding his own business, with no particular place to go and all the time in the world to get there. Then, he steps off the bus to help an old man who is obviously just a victim waiting to happen. But you know what they say about good deeds. Now, Reacher wants to make it right. An elderly couple have made a few well-meaning mistakes, and now they owe big money to some very bad people. One brazen move leads to another, and suddenly Reacher finds himself a wanted man in the middle of a brutal turf war between rival Ukrainian and Albanian gangs.

Where did Jack Reacher go?
Reviewed: 11-10-19
I am a big fan of this series and was happy to listen to it. I think it should be said the Scott Brick is not Dick Hill.
Scott Brick is a superb narrator.
It was the intonation and consistency of Dick Hill that gave a solid characterization of Reacher. When that varies from scene to scene and person to person even within the same character it degrades or at least doesn't add what the narrator often does.
The story was reasonable and imaginative enough.

From best-selling author Jon Krakauer, a stark, powerful, meticulously reported narrative about a series of sexual assaults at the University of Montana - stories that illuminate the human drama behind the national plague of campus rape.

it is like a broken record of an NPR broadcast

Would you try another book from Jon Krakauer and/or Mozhan Marno and Scott Brick ?
I like and respect Krakauer as an investigative journalist. This is not a good audiobook. I doubt I would have finished it if it was in written form. It seems like you are listening to an endless NPR broadcast. It is repetitive.Obviously important subject matter but I can't recommend it with as many stars as others.
Has Missoula turned you off from other books in this genre?
no
How could the performance have been better?
the narrators were 'meh'
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
yes the subject matter should be taught in high school
Any additional comments?
i think the repetitive nature of the subject matter is an important signal of the problem in our society. The interview testimony is not that interesting ('they drove without speaking to each other'). It is hard to be investigative when the conclusion of the 'investigation' is preordained.

After fifteen years in prison, he’s out . . . and there’s a G8 summit coming up, packed with enough world leaders to tempt any assassin.

Lee and Dick seem tired
Reviewed: 09-06-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I have listened to this series faithfully and have enjoyed most of them. The latest iteration of Jack Reacher left me wanting. The narration often has carried the book when the plot was lacking but in this case I thought Dick Hill's performance a bit lackluster. He seemed to rush through the first half and it wasn't until the last half that he started to sound more like his usual Reacher.
The plot was formulaic and predictable for Lee Child. The characterization was developed in a spotty fashion.
What could Lee Child have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The major premise of the book was weak. Reacher is not an operative on foreign soil--he's just a guy and the book ignored this major facet of the character. Also his getting out of all the different predicaments was too easy and predictable.
How could the performance have been better?
Dick Hill just wasn't his usual Reacher.
Do you think Personal needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Reacher does but Personal was just to odd to keep it going
Any additional comments?
Between this book and using a midget for the movie I am beginning to lose faith. I would like to see the real Reacher not the fake operative.

Story
After four trips to the Sahara and extensive historical research, David Ball crafted this sweeping adventure novel spanning two continents and 15 years. Set against a backdrop of the crumbling French Empire’s attempts to colonize the Sahara Desert, Empires of Sand follows the lives of two cousins who are raised as brothers but destined to become enemies. It is 1870, and France is at war with Prussia.

What did you like best about Empires of Sand? What did you like least?
I enjoyed most of the characters. I thought they were fairly well thought out and certainly what is amazing is that this is the authors first novel. The story was entertaining but not enthralling This is not a "page turner". Had I not been a big fan of the narrator I might not have finished it.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Karma is karma.
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His narration gives added meaning to the way words are used. if you have listened to enough of his narrations you are familiar with his various "people". This doesn't detract from the book. I really don't care that all the women sound like Irene Kennedy or the men like Mitch Rapp.
Do you think Empires of Sand needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I was not left hanging because the story was too fanciful for my limited imagination.

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, eyes on the road. Another man next to him, telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And next to her, a huge man with a broken nose, hitching a ride east to Virginia.

What did you like best about A Wanted Man? What did you like least?
I loved this performance. The story was so so. Dick Hill's interpretation of Reacher's broken nose speech was hilarious and made the book worth listening to. The story ending was not Lee Child's best nor did it showcase the many abilities of Reacher. On the other hand I can't wait for the next one!
Would you be willing to try another book from Lee Child? Why or why not?
yes, can't wait
Which scene was your favorite?
Pretty much any scene where Sorenson learns how to investigate from Reacher
Was A Wanted Man worth the listening time?
Absolutely
