Too much of a book pitch
Reviewed: 04-27-23
I love the Office and Office Ladies, this one was too much of a pitch for Rainn Wilson's new book.

Story
In a strange room in Morocco, Mary Russell is trying to solve a pressing mystery: Who am I? She has awakened with shadows in her mind, blood on her hands, and soldiers pounding on the door. Out in the hivelike streets, she discovers herself strangely adept in the skills of the underworld, escaping through alleys and rooftops, picking pockets and locks. She is clothed like a man, and armed only with her wits and a scrap of paper containing a mysterious Arabic phrase. Overhead, warplanes pass ominously north.

Super Disappointed...
Reviewed: 01-04-22
I really enjoy this book series. Have listened to every one up to this point. I cannot get into this book and I believe it stems from the male narrator (Ian McKenzie). I have a few reasons. If you have listened to all the others then you are used to Jenny Sterlin. She is fantastic in the series - brings it to life and to my ears IS Mary Russell. I think I understand why she does not do the entire book but I feel like she could have and it would have worked. In any case - McKenzies performance as Holmes, the narrator, etc...all sound the same to me. Like someone reading a book to you doing bad accents, in such a way as to not make it clear when transitioning from one character to the next. I found myself consistently having to re-evaluate the dialog to keep clear who he was speaking as. And as ridiculous as it sounds, all I hear is the Count from Sesame Street when he does one of the male characters in a hotel. I find him to be bland - which makes it difficult to allow the story to gain interest when it feels like someone is trading a textbook with minor inflection. I'm sad I used my credit for this one. I wish I had skipped and gone onto the next one that has Jenny Sterling narrating alone.

Story
Rainn Wilson’s memoir about growing up geeky and finally finding his place in comedy, faith, and life. For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a best-selling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: “I'm not on Facebook” is the new “I don't even own a TV”).

It started off quite good...

I enjoyed the first 70% or so of this book. Rainn Wilson reading the book makes it so much better. With the understanding that this is about his journey, including his faith - for me it felt more like an advertisement of the Bahai religion. I can appreciate the significance in his life but it seemed like it turned away from that connection into someone trying to sell me on it. It sounds very nice, just lost me towards the end.

Best book so far in the Minnesota series. Make sure to listen to the previous books in the series, as there are many characters that tie in to the storyline for this one.
