Story
In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

Delightful book, once I got into it
Reviewed: 09-29-22
It took me a few chapters more than I expected to really get invested, but once I did I was HOOKED! The author's understated narration really worked for me, again once I got used to it.
I look forward to reading this again with my daughter in some years!

Story
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

i found the first two chapters very slow going, but once chapter 3 hit things started to pick up speed! Very imaginative, difficult from anything else I've read.

Story
Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works.

Unlikable protagonist
Reviewed: 07-30-20
I knew I was getting a story about sisterly dynamics, with some modern African flavor, rather than serial killer details, and I was happy with that! Instead I got a protagonist who for some reason is a doormat and passive aggressive toward her beautiful dumb murderer sister (who tries to be nice). Halfway in, there was no buildup suggesting the narrator would ever grow a pair, and I realized with joy I could just stop reading it. Truly a disappointment.
Idk why other reviewers are complaining about this narrator for. She was great! Non-American accent on dialogue, appropriate to the story, clearly understandable. I'd happily listen to her work again.

Enjoyable again, but I'm done with the series
Reviewed: 07-30-20
It's such an imaginative series, and well told! but on this 2nd book I noticed sexist and racist tropes all over the place, and alas, each was followed to its usual shitty completion. I almost hate that I noticed them, because the story was so good! But I was able to predict the outcome and behavior of the women and people of color. I seem to have grown into someone who can't appreciate a good old boys' story.
If you wont notice or be distracted by things like the black character's skin color being named every time he was onscreen or the woman's plotlines being only about career and sex/romance, it's a brilliant fucking book!! I'm a bit heartbroken about this.

Engaging story, brilliantly narrated

This author is smart: gave me the kindle book free and this audiobook cheap via WhisperSync, trusting that it would be good enough to hook me on the series. It absolutely is! No regrets.
This story creatively weaves fantastic creatures and mythological systems into everyday life, the best kind of urban fantasy. Well-paced, and a nice mix of action, mystery, and character development. And, while this is clearly a tightly connected series, each book does have a real ending, which is important to me.
And the narration! Just phenomenal. The narration is 99% of why I'm here reviewing this, rather than leaving my reviews on Goodreads alone, as per usual. His voices for the characters were just perfect, adding that little extra to these great characters (I've missed his voices for the characters, having cheaped out and switched to kindle for the rest of the series).
Basically, I'm not sure what I could do to make this book better. Not only will I read more by this author, I think I may have to seek out more by this narrator, which is highly unusual for me!

Legends were great - but only half the audiobook!
Reviewed: 08-19-15
First and foremost, Shimmerman kills it as Quark, as always! Anyone who doesn't enjoy the stories and the explanations that surround them simply doesn't understand the Ferengi! They were perfect.
What frustrates me is that I thought I was paying for 3+ hours of Quark - but instead I received just shy of 2h of Quark, with about 90m of a TOS novella! The story was fine, and the Nimoy/Doohan team narration was great, but FALSE ADVERTISING!!!

This classic deserves better

Excellent classic tale! BUT Confusing Audio :(
Reviewed: 06-08-15
A worthy classic! I'm sure I can say nothing new about this story, but I especially enjoyed encountering this distinct, well fleshed-out society that is Arakis (and the Imperium).
BUT this felt like the melding of two audiobooks! The full-cast bits were excellent. The parts narrated entirely by Simon Vance were excellent. But when some scenes are full-cast and other scenes are all Vance? Took me out of the story when I remembered that I needed to figure out which voice matched which other-voice, to be sure I was thinking about the same character.
Very good and thoroughly enjoyable, but at the same time, so far below the quality I expect from Audible!

How familiar are you with the world's second-largest and fastest-growing religion? In these 12 lectures, Professor Esposito guides you through the facts and myths surrounding Islam and its more than 1.2 billion adherents. Many in the West know little about the faith and are familiar only with the actions of a minority of radical extremists, but this lecture series will help you better understand Islam's role as both a religion and a way of life, and its deep impact on world affairs both historically and today.

Good Info, Less than I Wanted, AWFUL LECTURER
Reviewed: 03-31-15
The information was good and respectful, and was presented well. I did learn stuff about Islam.
I'd been hoping for a LOT more detail, but that's largely my own fault for failing to notice that it was only a 6h course, as opposed to the 21h course I'd last purchased. Lesson learned!
But he was SO HARD to listen to! So many long random pauses! I listened to most of the course on 1.5x, and all was much improved, but there was still the occasional odd too-long pause. Even at 2x his speech patterns were distracting!
If I were to do this again, I'd look for the same lecturer's book on Audible, which looks to contain much of the same content, but is narrated by someone else.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Bonus points for actually hearing the snippets of other languages he uses to make points!

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky is considered one of the greatest Russian writers. His works have had a profound and lasting effect on 20th-century literature. His psychological penetration into the human soul had, in novels like Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, a profound influence on the 20th century novel. He also wrote a number of brilliant short stories along these same lines. "The Wedding" is one of his best.

I love the Russians, so I figured this quick short story would be entirely worth $1. Nooooo way! I only finished it because it was so short.
The narrator is very bad overall; his obviously unpracticed pronunciations of Russian names were just icing on the cake.
Good story, but get it by another narrator.
