Too Ugly to Revisit
Reviewed: 03-05-25
Donald Trump is a lizard in his ability to rise above his own corruption and incompetence and sell himself to the American voting public. If you want to beat your head against a wall, this is for you. Michael Wolff has an ear for the smallest of nuances that capture Trump's rise after his ignominious loss to Joe Biden and astonishing win in the 2024 election. I was rooting for the other side. Listen if you can stand it.

Story
In January 2023, bestselling author Johann Hari started to inject himself once a week with Ozempic, the diabetes drug that produces significant weight loss. He wasn’t alone—credible predictions suggest that in two years, a quarter of the U.S. population will be taking this class of drug. Proponents say that this is a biological solution to a biological problem. While 95 percent of diets fail, the average person taking one of the new drugs will lose a quarter of their body weight in six months, and keep it off for as long as they take it.

A worthwhile and engaging read.
Johann Hari sees the danger to himself and others who use weight loss drugs. I was gratified to find that a healthy diet is still the best medicine, and that will be my personal choice. But there are many more who, like the author, prefer to chance the serious side effects described here and do it the "modern way". To each his own!

Then, in the summer of 2020, he’s assigned to a grotesque murder case that brings national media focus to rural Patrick County, Virginia—Alicia Benson, the wife of a wealthy businessman, is murdered in her home. Story
Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

After the lack of connection and role models led him down a spiral of risky behavior, Wolf escaped to survive. In Orlando, he found what he’d been searching for: belonging—in a community that was a safe space with people he’d come to call his chosen family.

Brandon Wolf's words at the end of his book reveal why it is so absorbing: why does your story matter? His story matters because it touches so many parts of our lives: relationships with parents and loved ones, the awkwardness of coming-of-age, the trauma of tragedy and healing. Wonderful book!

Story
Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

If you heeded the warning of "Anonymous," you will be interested in this book. Miles Taylor was the unnamed author of a 9/5/2018 bombshell article in the NYT that exposed the corruption, chaos and stupidity of the Trump Administration. Here, he recounts what led him to write the opinion piece and, just before the 2020 election, the book "A Warning". He reads his own story, and it's a thriller.

Story
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.
