Story
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Truly a heartwarming story

There are some books that so delight a reader that she just wants to shout it out from the rooftops, READ THIS BOOK! Such is the case with The One and Only Ivan, written by the author Katherine Appelgate, previously unknown to me and now a favorite. At the risk of sounding overly effusive, this book is heartwarming, soul touching, totally engaging, while not being at all overly sentimental. It has elements of distress as well, because it is written with an intelligent, careful realism without being preachy about the rights of animals in this world in which we live.
