Story
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

No one has made incredibly intricate detail and daily travel logs so interesting since Gulliver's Travels. And this story does so with a good helping of humorous irreverence. Watney is a great character: resourceful, driven, optimistic and a piss-taker extraordinaire. This is my second listen after a few years and it was just as funny, intriguing and cathartic as before. One moment your heart will be palpitating over some life or death situation, the next you'll be killing yourself laughing at Watney's bathos. The narrator does an amazing job, his characterisation of Watney is just perfect. His accents for other characters can overlap at times. But his sense of timing and his riveting dramatisation make me feel like he's reading a script with stage directions: that's just how good he is at reading subtext. The perfect narrator for a stellar sci-fi novel!

Story
Edward Bloom, an aging salesman, is dying. As his grown son, William, cares for him, the young man tries to focus on what he knows about his father’s life. Story after story surfaces in William’s memory, and he shares mythic visions of a fantastic father who was loved by all - a man who was the best runner, fisherman, businessman, and adventurer in the world. Big Fish tells these tall tales of Edward Bloom’s life. Punctuated with his vast repertory of jokes, they set the stage for Edward’s final, wonderful transformation.

Stop me if you've heard this one. A humorous and beautiful story we can't believe but all want to believe in. Had me tearing up, laughing my head off and soaking in life lessons like a sponge. Made me feel like a kid too.
