Such a rich theme!

I loved this book, especially because of its original and oh-so-intriguing plot. Deeper layers also give food for thought about your own life, determination, and free will. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and wholeheartedly recommend the read.

Story
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Unnecessarily complex
Reviewed: 10-27-24
The story is about a book. If they had stuck to just that story, it would’ve been fine and enjoyable to read. Unfortunately, after you’ve finally wrapped your head around the characters and suspects in the book (which is normal and expected in a murder mystery), you’re pulled out and thrown into a completely different setting and confronted with not one but two casts of new characters and complex relationships- vaguely connected to the book, but in my opinion fairly contrived, completely unnecessary, and distracting.
The reading performance is phenomenal, though.

Eve has a good life. She wakes up each day, kisses her husband Nate, and heads off to teach math at the local high school. All is as it should be. Except… Last year, Caseham High was rocked by a scandal involving a student-teacher affair, with one student, Addie, at its center. But Eve knows there is far more to these ugly rumors than meets the eye. Addie can’t be trusted. She lies. She hurts people. She destroys lives. At least, that’s what everyone says. But nobody knows the real Addie. Nobody knows the secrets that could destroy her. And Addie will do anything to keep it quiet…

Great ending

I enjoyed the story. Although many twists weren’t surprising (except the one at the very end), it was engaging and entertaining. Unfortunately, I found the female reader’s interpretation of the male voices so disturbing it nearly made me stop listening. All men, good and bad, and even a teenage boy sounded like evil spirits; as if they could only whisper and hiss out words. Her reading of the narrative and female voices was great, though.
I’m glad I persisted, as the story is well written.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Great characters, easy to follow, skillfully written. At times heartbreaking and at times heartwarming, I was sad to leave Tove and her world behind when the reading was over. I love how Van Pelt included an octopus with a plot-driving role into the story. Highly recommended.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Brilliant

From the gripping beginning to the very end, this book had me hooked. I loved the premise, how it brought out the characters’ most ugly and most lovely personalities, and how the consequences of such an impossible situation somehow seemed so real. I got lost often in the enormous cast of characters (too many for me to keep track), but even that didn’t deter from the story.
It’s a great read!

Story
Four brand-new horror novellas all about books, stories, manuscripts—the written word has never had sharper teeth. In The Skin of Her Teeth, a cursed novel drives people to their deaths. A delivery job turns deadly in The Dark Brothers' Last Ride. In This Book Belongs to Olo, a lonely child has dangerous control over an usual pop-up book. A choose-your-own adventure game spirals into an uncanny reality in The Story. Full of creepy suspense, these collected novellas are perfect for fans of Paul Tremblay, Stephen King, and Joe Hill.
