Story
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

Hard to Listen
Reviewed: 12-13-24
I understand that the main character is negative, but I feel like the narrator overdid it. She sounds like a bratty teenager and not a twenty something adult. Maybe it gets better? I might continue to listen...The problem may be the writing too. Why do all the characters have to be so rude to each other? I hope that's not how most families are. Mine certainly isn't, so maybe my perspective is skewed. But again...maybe it gets better? I want to keep listening and find out, but the narrator is so hard to listen to! There are so many positive reviews, so maybe i need to stick it out.

Story
Susanna Weber is the best dress maker in Imperial Vienna. Through skill and hard work, she now owns her own dress shop, looking out over the beautiful Madensky Square. To do so, she has left her past behind, if not without regret, at least resolutely. Looking around her, at her customers and friends, Susanna is aware that she has more than most - but a few small changes cause her to realize just how precarious her situation is.

Fantastic Narrator

Eva Ibbotson is one of my favorite authors, and this one did not disappoint. However, I'm glad I listened to it instead of reading it. The narrator was fantastic! I could listen to her all day!
