Story
On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was good-bye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more.

Relatable, touching, informative and interesting

I feel like this writer could write a whole book on paper clips and it would be poetic and interesting. The book kind of feels like two separate books in one but I do like how the writer is able to keep me engaged and interested the whole time. Fascinating topic.

Story
When 81-year-old Jay Mendelsohn decides to enroll in the undergraduate Odyssey seminar his son teaches at Bard College, the two find themselves on an adventure as profoundly emotional as it is intellectual. For Jay, a retired research scientist who sees the world through a mathematician's unforgiving eyes, this return to the classroom is his "one last chance" to learn the great literature he'd neglected in his youth - and, even more, a final opportunity to more fully understand his son, a writer and classicist.

Pleasantly surprised

I read this for a book club. Expected to be bored by it but really enjoyed it, especially since I had never read the original Odyssey. Great reoccurring themes and parallels. Would definitely recommend.
