Story
Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

Rambling narrator
Reviewed: 01-01-24
I found myself fast forwarding throughout this book due to the rambling thoughts of the narrator. All of her “footnotes” became tedious like listening to a teenager overhearing self important details that did not pertain to the story. I liked the story and was just anxious for it to progress. I would not recommend this book.

Story
On a struggling Texas plantation, six enslaved women slip from their sleeping quarters and gather in the woods under the cover of night. The Lucys—as they call the plantation owners, after Lucifer himself—have decided to turn around the farm’s bleak financial prospects by making the women bear children. They have hired a “stockman” to impregnate them. But the women are determined to protect themselves.

A story that didn’t seem to find a direction
Reviewed: 02-22-23
I was excited about this book when I started it. When the story ended I had to go back to the make sure I hadn’t skipped any chapters. Just kind of leaves the characters hanging through out the story and even in the end.
