Story
Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent. Vanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life

Too long
Reviewed: 08-28-22
This book was Ok but it was too long for me, personal preference. I was disappointed to find the the main and almost every other character was mixed and not a black woman. I've found that they are over represented in media about the black experience. Overall the book was enjoyable. Thank you

Story
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

I did not like the characters, the narration or the story. Too much sex and none of the characters were likeable or anyone I could empathize with. I was bored with this one. I thought I would like this since the ratings were high but I did not enjoy it at all

The book was good
Reviewed: 08-05-21
The ending was too open for me. I liked Josephine's character, story and narrator while the other character was bland and the narrator's voice for that character was one that I didn't enjoy listening to. The book was good but so much was left open, I didn't enjoy leaving Josephine for the young lady at all.

Abigail was "bitter" and loved to call it with everyone else
I hated every character in this book. why did she hate her aunts and uncle for wanting to be acknowledged? meanwhile, she was nothing but granddaughter and felt entitled to her grandfather's things. she had no empathy for anyone else. everyone in this book was miserable. all racist except margaret's daughter who married a black man. hated everyone but margaret's daughter
