One summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Among them are a Wall Street wunderkind, a young woman coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy, an injured veteran returning from Afghanistan, a business tycoon, and a free-spirited woman running away from her controlling husband. Touching and very real

I was a bit unsure about this book when it became apparent that it was going to toggle back and forth the way it did. Where was the suspense? We already know the plane crashed. But I think it worked as an absorbing sort of meditation on one tragedy that affected many people dealing with a variety of challenges at different parts of their lives. The mechanics of the crash were vivid, and the relationships deftly handled. Great narrator, too. I’d recommend it for sure.

Story
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

A bit long but great characters

Loved the Kid, loved the Trash Can Man, and especially loved Tom Cullen. Laws, yes. Wild and totally crazy story, well-told, if a bit indulgent in length.
