Josephine Baker had an amazing life. She must have had the Divine watching over her even thought she endured such poverty and abuse as a child. I have to wonder how she managed to move forward, but she never gave up . This historical novel reveals her life and her dreams as a woman. Her story inspires me and gives me hope for humanity. We should all try to do something that improves the lives of others as Josephine Baker has done.

Perfect book.for reading during a pandemic. After reading mostly scientific books this novel added great characters and a plot along with a history lesson of past epidemics.

Takes me back

I really enjoyed this book. It brought back so many memories of my life growing up listening to James Taylor and learning how to play his songs from song books and records. Listening to his autobiography is an amazing journey. I want to thank him for sharing his life, which unfortunately was full of so much pain. His story is also one of hope. We can never know when a sad life can turn into a happy one. We all have to keep moving forward. I'm so glad he made it through the darkness and is still with us as we all forward on.

Dark very dark

This is a well written work, showing a dark reality of American life past and present. It reveals the difficulty of being African American in a racist society and also the sad fact that White people who want to move forward and work toward equality are stuck walking a fine line as well. There is hope but it's covered in darkness. I can imagine this book being a really good movie.

Lots of characters to follow, many of them quite complicated which keeps it all very interesting. Nice twists and turns. The narration is good and easy to listen to. Anyone who knows New York City will enjoy the familiar scenery.

For me, there was so much new information about the history of the USA revealed in this book.
After reading, I now look at all aspects of American life with different eyes. The writer does an amazing job of bringing the voices of the enslaved people to life. It's like they finally get to tell their side of the story. The book will certainly open your eyes to new truths.
Well researched and well put together. Happy to keep this book in my collection.
