Story
For listeners who are tired of Christmas commercialism, or who feel that Santa Claus and reindeer don’t tell the whole story, these classic gems provide a winning alternative. Selected for their insightfulness, spiritual value, and literary quality (nothing moralistic here) they project the spirit of the season in a fresh, compelling manner that will resonate with listeners of all ages - from children too young to read to themselves, to parents and grandparents who enjoy listening to stories, as well.

A few good tales.
Reviewed: 12-15-23
I liked the international flavor of this short story collection about the true meaning of Christmas, however, only a handful of the lot resonated with me. Still this was a good sale purchase to enjoy during the Advent season and perhaps revisit someday. It may be that this is a better collection to read than listen to as the narrators where good, but not great.

Story
Timepieces have long accompanied us on our travels, from the depths of the oceans to the summit of Everest, the ice of the arctic to the sands of the deserts, outer space to the surface of the moon. The watch has sculpted the social and economic development of modern society; it is an object that, when disassembled, can give us new insights both into the motivations of inventors and craftsmen of the past, and, into the lives of the people who treasured them.

Absolutely fun and magical!
Reviewed: 09-11-23
In case you missed the description this is the complete collection of the Chronicles of Narnia BBC RADIO DRAMATIZATIONS. So of course they are "abridged" so to speak. However, they are also wonderfully fun and well worth the listen. The music, sound effects and voice actors are great and in true BBC fashion, the essence of the stories remains intact. Highly recommended!

Story
Wait Till Next Yearis the story of a young girl growing up in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, when owning a single-family home on a tree-lined street meant the realization of dreams, when everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the children gathered in the streets to play from sunup to sundown. The neighborhood was equally divided among Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans, and the corner stores were the scenes of fierce and affectionate rivalries.

Story
Whenever middle-aged desert tour guide Forrest Bryant Johnson went out on his daily walks into the Mojave, all was usually peaceful and serene. But one beautiful summer day in 1987, Forrest heard a cry of distress. Following the cries, he came upon a small bobcat kitten, injured, orphaned, and desperately in need of help. So Forrest took his new feline friend home for a night.

Enjoyable, if flawed book.
Reviewed: 07-01-21
Overall I enjoyed this book; however, I found myself questioning various aspects of the author's relationship with Trooper as well as his own family. Unfortunately the narrator almost spoke as if reading to children and this did not help. Though the writing style was not my favorite, this may have been a more enjoyable book to read than listen to.

Story
When Oona Britt was born in the magical town of Nordlor, where all of the homes are built from wrecked ships, her parents never expected her to be a girl. Having listened to a faulty prediction from a washed-up soothsayer, they were promised 'bold and brave son', so as the youngest of seven sisters, Oona's birth became a disappointment - especially to her sea captain father, who doesn't believe there's a place for girls aboard ships. But Oona is different from the rest of her family. She longs for adventure and knowledge.

Whimsical, nautical tale.
Reviewed: 04-16-21
Overall I enjoyed this fantasy story; it has almost an old-fashioned folktale quality. The world the author creates is one I would like to explore with Oona, the main character, who I really liked. The nautical tone really grabbed me and the narrator proved good too. However, many of the minor characters felt one-dimensional and aspects of the story needed further development. Overall a good solid listen, but not a great one.

A tale of smuggling and mystery on the Dorset coast as told by John Trenchard, a boy obsessed with discovering the secret of Colonel 'Blackbeard' Mohune's hidden treasure. One night, trapped in the Mohune family vault beneath the church, John finds a locket round the Colonel's neck which contains verses from the Psalms of David. What could it mean?

I took a chance on Moonfleet because some compared it with Treasure Island. Though they share a similar tang, ultimately I found myself enjoying this story quite a bit more. For though it contains a fair amount of action and adventure, it's also much more. Time just flew by as Peter Joyce brilliantly narrated each character. He also managed to keep up a high energy for the action that does take place.

At last the complete collection is available. The characters and vignettes in this series are always full of old-fashioned charm, humor, and sometimes sadness. All the delightful and bizarre inhabitants of Wonderland are here: the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat, the hooka-smoking Caterpillar and the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Ugly Duchess... and, of course, Alice herself - growing alternately taller and smaller, attending demented tea parties and eccentric croquet games, and observing everything with clarity and rational amazement.

His performance is the winner for me! Not only does he bring the different characters to life, he also captures the humor of these classics very well.

Quiller-Couch translates four French fairy tales into English, some of which are perennial favorites, witness Disney's animated rendering of Beauty and the Beast or Jean Cocteau's critically acclaimed film version of the tale. Simple, well told and read fairy tales.
Reviewed: 08-29-20
Apart from the tale of Bluebeard, which is frankly dismaying, these classic fairy tales are a nice listen. I would not say they are necessarily geared toward children. Instead, they are simply, stylishly told tales filled with delicate details often left out in modern retellings. The narrator does an excellent job bringing them to life as fairy tales should be read aloud.
