I found this book on a whim and now I think the book gods like me! I don't know when I last listened to such an engaging story with such expertly crafted narration!! I was slightly peeved that there was a book two but not yet available.
The main character is human but with the stuff of legends. This story didn't get too stuck in the weeds, which I appreciate. The character stayed true to the person presented in chapter one and didn't do anything stupid or against character to propel the story forward. (I so hate that!)
The crime, the police work, and the finale were insanely good. Man, I hate having to wait to jump back into this world!

This. Book. Was. So. Good.
This book grabbed me early and I wasn't able to put it down until the very satisfying ending.
As crime books go, this book is definitely up there with the greats. The narrator though is the holy grail for how to narrate this genre!!
Patterson absolutely nailed the vocals. It felt like being in the room with these people.

To be honest, I downloaded this book because it was free and because I loved the cover art. Imagine my surprise to discover it was an excellent listen, with some great characters, and an insanely good series of stories.
You don't have to be into the fae or mystical worlds to love this series; the stories deliver on their own.

Loved. This. Series.
Reviewed: 03-17-24
I have listened to every single book in this series and I am so bummed that there is not another listen (although, with the way this story ended, I am hoping there is one.)
Nate Shepherd is the kind of character that you very much wish was real. He loves and lives. He is decent and funny. He has a family we should all aspire to have. And he's a legal genius.
Every book pitted him against a formidable opponent. Nate was, for the most part, pretty sure his client didn't do it. The system did not always agree. Listening to Nate struggle with his own sense of morality and right and wrong was a treat. No, he wasn't a saint. He was human, and that makes him more than.
Loved, loved, loved this series!!!

In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

If you like Molly Harper books, especially Harper's Mystic Bayou series, you will love this listen. This paranormal cozy mystery hits on all facets and is elevated by some seriously good narration.
The story involves a nod to the nostalgic since the main character owns a video rental store (remember those?) That's the first smile. Then the supernatural townsfolk are introduced and the fun begins.
The narrator is the real reason this story soars. The character voices are very inventive and unique, which is a must with supernatural content.

Story
I played all those cool video games. I watched all those movies. I even read the books. In most of 'em, the hero shoots the bad guys, drives a sweet car, never gets hungry, and always seems to get laid by the end. Yeah. Whatever. I gotta be straight with you about why I wrote this journal, and it comes down to one thing, the apocalypse kinda sucks. It doesn’t meet my expectations at all.

Ray Porter fans are in for a treat with this listen! Every single word in this book is a diary entry (no surprise there) and the author and narrator combined to make this story rich and wonderful.
Dusty is a dooms day survivor with a cheeky look at the world he now inhabits, His words are written for whomever or whatever survives him. His observations and survival skills are a great listen, delivered by one of the best narrators in the business. It seriously takes talent to be a single voice reading diary entries and making that a mist-listen. Porter made it look easy.

I must say though that what I liked the best was the ending. I won't give anything away but the author needs to be commended for that alone!!
