It did not compare at all to Miss Austen. The reader debased it even more with annoying and shrill voices. Huge disappointment.

Story
English novelist Barbara Pym’s career was defined, in many senses, by rejection. Her first novel Some Tame Gazelle was turned down by every publisher she sent it out in 1935, finally published only 15 years later. Though she picked up a publisher from there and received modest praise, the publishing industry grew restless and her sales spiralled downwards. By her seventh novel, she had been dropped. This brilliant biography, brimming with Pym’s private diaries and intimate letters, offers a first full insight into Barbara Pym’s life and how it informed her writing.

As I devoted Barbara Pym fan in America, where I have yet to meet anyone who knows BP, I was thrilled to see this book. I loved every minute of the audible. Amanda B is a perfect choice for the reader.

Story
After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There—after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes—Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe.

Hated it!

Since it was shortlisted for 2021’s Booker Prize it thought it would be a great read. Terribly disappointed!! Pompous and tedious!! So boring! I stuck with it because I expected it would get better. The readers, especially the modern times one, were horrible. I listened at entire book at 1.4x the speed it was so slowly read. Painful to listen to voice of the modern actress. Her attempt at being lost and bored, had me cringing.

I consider A Gentleman in Moscow one of the best books I’ve read. I consider The Lincoln Highway one of the worst. Boring and highly redundant. Pretentious and pedantic.

Story
A Christmas Carol is one of Charles Dickens' best loved tales. Ebenezer Scrooge, described as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner," is certainly no lover of the Christmas season. He is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him that he will be visited by three further spirits: The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come.

Story
The villagers of Thrush Green celebrate Christmas traditionally, in a way that has hardly changed over the generations. Children eagerly hang up their stockings, families go to church together and everyone enjoys the treats of the festive season. And when it snows as the carol singers make their way round the cottages on the green, it looks as if Christmas will be perfect this year. But not everything is as peaceful as it seems.

Snobbery
Reviewed: 12-14-20
When I was purchasing this I’d read someone’s review about the British characters being snobs. I hadn’t realized how hard it was to endure. It was painful to hear these characters being so sanctimonious. And at Christmas!!!i I kept expecting some Christian charity at the end. No way. They justified their snobbery. Terrible. Great reader though.
