Perfect combinations of everything I love... Murder, an angry ghost, betrayal, redemption, suspense, love, lost love... I would've preferred a little more blood, gore and fear... but this book does touch on those areas to an extent for sure! I'll be waiting "patiently" for another book by Simone St James.

On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

Honestly, the Ending Ruined It

So, the ending could have been much different. It felt to me as the author got us soooo far and then "wham"! Ends it! I really think my rating hinged on the ending. I am very disappointed. Not my cup of tea, I guess. Some readers may love it! I just can imagine a 100 other ways it could've ended. sorry!

I read this book when it was initially released and then couldn't wait to listen to it. The narrator did a great job- and that's very important to me. This book is full of mystery, creepiness, paranormal activity, murder & lovable characters. I LOVE the combination of NDE's, murder mystery, psychic abilities and ghosts. I can not WAIT until November to see where this book left off.

Nailed It!

I have to say, the last book by Simone St James was NOT my favorite, in fact I left a pretty blunt and brutally honest review. To say she has 100% redeemed herself in my eyes would be an injustice to this book right here. Murder Road was AWESOME! Creepy, suspenseful, scary, bittersweet, engaging, funny... basically if there were a checklist of all the necessary components an "awesome" book has to have to be "awesome", all components would be checked off.
Similarly, the production and performance was PERFECT too! Brittany Pressley gets 5 Stars from me and I will look for her name more often!

Story
In 1919, Kitty Weekes, pretty, resourceful, and on the run, falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House—its plaster is crumbling, its plumbing makes eerie noises, and strange breaths of cold waft through the empty rooms.

I waited so long for this book to come out and I was hoping for another Broken Girls maybe?? I am 4 hours in and this story is just stagnant at best! I have listened and listened and hoped something significant would happen and it's just not happening. There is NO "catch-you-and-grip-you-til-the-end" at ALL!!
I understand the importance of atmospheric description but it's "over the top" and so unnecessary. The description of nasty bathrooms, the nurses uniforms and the smell of vomit seem to last forever and I really still have no idea why because this book gives you nothing for the first 4 hours. I'm going to try to finish because I paid actual money for the book because I don't get my credit until the 16th and of course I couldn't wait til then. Ugh. I'm hoping something interesting and meaningful happens soon. That is all. Oh! The narrator is GREAT! I can't blame her for the content!

Story
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.
