Story
She's been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . . . But now that she's been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last. Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they've given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do—or see—that landed them in this god-awful mess?

A little ok, a little bad
Reviewed: 02-04-25
She’s not smart. Not even tv smart. Every few weeks they get pulled from the witness protection program, she knows this isn’t normal but doesn’t suspect a mole? It’s annoying to listen to her blame her father for doing something bad even though she knows just seeing something you shouldn’t is an option. She comes up with dumb options for trying to get out of things and her boyfriend has to come up with all of the smart ideas. She then tries to ditch him 1000x even though he’s obviously the brains. It’s hard to read a character that is this incapable of making a smart decision when her life really does depend on it.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

The Anti-Harry Potter you’ll still love
Reviewed: 10-11-23
This is my favorite series. If you’ve ever felt isolated, or antisocial or like an outsider struggling to figure out what to do next, this is your heroine. She’s not bright or bubbly and she definitely doesn’t get it right the first time but she’s loyal and brave and slowly learns to trust and open herself up to the world, not for what it can give her but because she knows in her heart the right thing to do.
This is definitely a YA coming of age story. Naomi Novik’s other books are more intricate fairy tales. I like both but they’re completely different genres and if you’re looking for another Spinning Silver this isn’t it. If you like YA fantasy, pick up a chair and stay for a listen, or 3.

An answer to negative feedback makes for a terrible sequel
Reviewed: 06-10-22
I loved the first book. Is a great relisten on any day, but this sequel destroys everything positive about the first one. It’s like Cline got a bunch negative feedback about choosing reverence to the 80s and John Hughes and possibly friendship and so went in and wrote a book that took it all back. Not a fun listen.

Story
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

Anticlimactic climax
Reviewed: 06-23-21
The story is about solving a mystery and I have to admit that I was in it. I wanted to know what happened in the past. I liked the story setup. I bought how they had faith that that if they kept searching for answers that they’d find a solution. I was following along fine but I have serious problems with the climax of this story. The big scene at the end of the book that the story leads up to could be completely taken out and the story ends exactly the same way. It leaves you feeling unsatisfied. There are a few other plot holes and head scratching “why would she do that moments” in the book as well, but I can look past all of them except that climax.
