Story
It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

Mick “Scorcherˮ Kennedy is the star of the Dublin Murder Squad. He plays by the books and plays hard, and thatʼs how the biggest case of the year ends up in his hands. On one of the half-abandoned “luxuryˮ developments that litter Ireland, Patrick Spain and his two young children have been murdered. His wife, Jenny, is in intensive care. At first, Scorcher thinks itʼs going to be an easy solve, but too many small things can't be explained.

Thoughts of the story
Reviewed: 06-05-23
After awhile, it sounded like it was turning into a Stephen King novel with the mystery animal in the attic, holes in walls, etc. She does know how to develop characters and personalities. Not sure I liked the acting/voice for Dina, the sister of the main character Scorcher. She came off as way too intense and nasty, not mentally ill or sad. Several other times Scorcher screaming at his partner seemed way off. I wouldn’t have read it that way; he was in control of his emotions- remember? Hence 3 stars for performance. The way in the end, how he felt he was responsible for his mother’s suicide was really poignant.

Story
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Narrator must’ve been at her hometown football game and yelled the whole time. I wasn’t real crazy about the whisper voice, but eventually got used to it.
Story was great. It all seemed to pull together with no great leaps. I really enjoyed it. I was hoping the main character would tell her mother off and get her own place but it strangely never happened. She never hooked up with Tim either. That was sad!

I loved this story. The characters were real and believable. It doesn’t go directly from a-z and it was fun to listen to. We can relate to the story in this house because the character is of a certain age and has his flaws and wisdom that only an older person can have. Bosch is a complex and likable guy.

Not a fan of this narrator

Love this author and his story, but to me, the narrator was all wrong for this book. Orlagh Cassidy was wonderful as Knox et al., and Ron McLarty as Puller, but a 6’5” 240# guy who whispers, and tenor is more like Danny Bonaduce, does not work for me. Loved the story, and also wish he would read slower, as I like to enjoy my stories!

The best part of this story is the writer’s development of the main character, Mr. Strike. The story is very good, though not exactly original, in the sense that it’s another murder mystery, but the story is so well developed and well done, I really enjoyed it.
